Hi, does anyone know the diameter of the air-filter to fit a 1993 chim 400?
I want to get a higher quality filter than the ramair foam cylinder if anyone has any suggestions?
Thanks!

ACT Performance used to sell a K&N but dont stock anymore for some reason but personally id just get an original pipercross one.
They can be cleaned an re oiled, there wont be any performance gain from another filter.
The ID of the fiter is 75mm i believe so if you wanted to try and buy one you could identify using the K&N website.

Considering a number over the years including myself had a filter collapsing under full acceleration I’d go for the best you can get. I’ve never had a Piper filter so can’t compare but I do know the K&N filter I fitted about 12 years ago is still in great condition and can be cleaned and re oiled very easily and shows no sign of collapsing.
For the cost and the fact they last years go for the best you can as you won’t be buying a new one in a hurry.
In truth I think both the Piper and K&N options are probably very similar.

Important checks
As the original air intake pipe ages the strengthening wire can rust and become weak especially where it goes into the wing and is forced through a tight bend to line up with the filter.
Check along the air intake pipe for weakness and if it feels soft at any point this too can collapse so keep your eye on it.
I noticed on full acceleration the car sometimes felt slightly less powerful which was due to a collapsing filter and piping.
I was on a runway trying to go past 160 mph biggrin
I found my intake pipe both weak and had pin prick age related holes in the fabric so drawing air in via a hot engine bay!
Reluctantly I paid the premium for ACT rubberised smooth bore intake system as I didn’t consider it to be any better than the original until I fitted it.
It’s been designed with bespoke bends for the section that goes into the wing.
A bd to fit but once you have the air appears to have less restriction and I’ve been impressed with its rugged nature and performance.
It’s not strictly necessary but imho a good mod and improvement. smile
