Renewed with DIY vigour, I’m thinking of adding one of these to a downstairs room so we can use it as an occasional bedroom.

The kits look a bit cheap for a lot of money so I’m going to build from timber as we’ve a great local supplier.

Any suggestions for construction the “hinge” bit that allows the bed to be lifted 90 degrees to back against the wall?

Once completed, I’m hoping the assembly will just look like a narrow wardrobe against one wall that we’ll dress up a little / maybe embed a TV into for when the bed is up.

I’ve looked at sofa beds (have one in there currently) but they are all too small or quite expensive for the size of bed I can build in timber myself.

Also, I do like the idea of the whole bed lifting flat against the wall when not in use…

Can't it be just like an ordinary hinge, only bigger? And then a simple catch to hold it against the wall.

Threaded bar at both sides, but you will need to ensure that the folded base stays against the wall somehow, perhaps a ratchet strap?

Some great ideas, thank you.

Also for the link.

I’m favouring threaded bar for the hinge itself, and lots of 2X4 for the main frame.

Wall attachment via shot bolts into the side casings and the mattress will be strapped to the mobile base.

When away, it will look like a wardrobe or possibly a set of shelving based on the underside depth.
