Last sentence is spot on.Silver isn't the best colour IMO. I had a graphite grey phase 2 G-reg back in the 90s and loved it. I always thought the colour scheme on the Goodwood was odd - the alloys, etc. All so expensive now for good ones. I'd love one but too expensive for me - like most things from the 90s now

I recall the 309’s UK launch around 1986 and I thought it was a poor quality ugly looking thing. I don’t think it helped that most seemed to be finished in beige and were really basic.
However I just loved the original 309GTI and thought it looked great, was fast and had a touch of practicality. I also liked them in silver. However I didn’t like the look of the 5 door version or the facelift model.
This one looks a shrewd buy for someone.

The 309 wasn’t originally meant to be a Peugeot. It was intended to be a Talbot, badged ‘Arizona’ and a replacement for the Talbot Horizon.Hence it was rather plasticky in phase 1 form and often seen in beige as Peugeot didn’t throw a lot of weight behind it (and why the numbering wasn’t consecutive with previous Peugeots).
From 93 to around 98 this was one of my most sought after cars for trading, if you bought a 309 GTi in central Scotland during that period
there is a good chance you bought it from me, had well over 30 during that time and scoured the country for them, only 3dr versions
though, the 5dr just never interested me at all. One of the nicest ones I had was bought from Shotts auction, a black phase 2,
just turned 3 year old, 40k miles and had been a BP company car, whoever had it had looked after it seriously well, it was mint,
actually kept it as a daily runner for about 4 months.
Beautiful handling cars, much better than the 205 i thought, and had loads of them as well. And the air horns was such a good tone,
the sunroof air seal, and the way the rear quarter windows opened. Who gives a FF what the dissers think, if we all liked the same
thing what a boring world it would be.

I remember the same things too, the hiss of the sunroof seal, the levers for the rear quarter windows ( everyone who had a lift was intrigued to know what they were for ), the air horns …….. and that distinctive smell when driven hard there is a good chance you bought it from me, had well over 30 during that time and scoured the country for them, only 3dr versions

I’m going to get flamed for this but bear with me. I always liked the 309 Gti. It was from a time when manufacturers created a sporty model with nice alloys and exterior touches with red highlights. Sporty interiors again with red trim, seatbelts and model designation in the interiors. They were stand out and seemed special and exciting.
Now the flaming bit …I’m currently listing after the new Smart #3 Brabus. Multiple exterior colour options with roof in contrasting colours. Red Calipers, special wheels, red seat belts and interior stitching, sports seats with Brabus logos. 435bhp and 3.7 seconds to 60 mph.
I know there will be those that won’t like it as it’s an EV but what I’m saying is it should be applauded that someone is selling a car that has this sort of finishing. I would take it over a white goods EV as like the 309 GTi did in period it seems more special.

Sadly not in the UK though, one of the reasons we used to strip Mi16s and do it ourself, and probably a big factor in why the Mi16is now so very rare as they all had the guts pulled out of them for 205 and 309s.
I had a 88 model in black. Couldn't wait to see the back of it. It was brought when I came back from the US to work in Northern Ireland in 96, as the banks wouldn't lend me the money to buy a newer car, and it seemed a good idea at the time.
My first digs in Belfast were in a bad area. I had a bike rack that hooked onto the rear hatch. I must have not tightened something properly, because when I turned a corner, the rear hatch glass shattered, dropping the rear hatch onto Sandy Row. At first I thought someone was slinging rocks at me, because Belfast.
Then the clutch cable snapped on me at 5pm on a friday in the middle of Dublin. The RAC refused to even take me to the border, but instead dumped me at a Peugeot dealer, who helpfully offered to book me in next Thursday, though they had the part. I had to pay the mechanic clocking off through the nose for the cable to be fitted, and not be adjusted.
I didn't gel with the car. Traded it in for a Eunos Roadster fresh off the boat. It was written off 3 weeks later.

The closest I came to a 309GTI was putting a steering wheel from one (from a scrapper) onto my '83 205 1.1GL. A chunky leather bound wheel with 'GTI' on a rusty 13 year old beige (Antelope Beige according to the paint code, no less) tin can did not improve this spotty 17 year old's image, unsurprisingly!
A couple of years later a mate had a 309 SRi, that clung on to the road very well as he was doing his qualifying lap impression every time we were out in it.
