The problem is nobody actually reads anything any more. Unless it's the McDonalds drive 'thru' menu, or the musings of the latest big brother human scum, I don't do reading isn't it?
This is my take on it too. They read some simple stuff at school, and they've heard the words they want to use but have never seen them in print, and it never occurs to them that they are making laughable mistakes. The one that gets me incandescent: "aks" instead of "ask".

I'm 100% certain that in my dotage I'll be arguing with a heavy-set nurse about this one. She'll be putting not-so-subtle pressure on me to concede, with the threat of leaving me to sit in a pool of my own filth for a day if I don't.

have we had bald/bold yet? Really bloody irritating, along with paraletic...do they think it comes from paralesis?
I think you may have hit it on the head with the not reading thing, whoever it was up there...I actually overheard a colleague say that her bosses e-mail sent that morning to update her on the week ahead had 'too many words in it making it too difficult to understand'!!! She gets paid to do a job of work, too!
