MOT fail due to no BS mark on Plates
Discussion
Really sorry for the confusion ….
Just picked the car up and the plates do have a BS stamp but use 3d style lettering which is apparently illegal [is this correct?]
Interestingly, they don’t have the Post Code [but they didn't mention that].
Maybe it would be easier to just get some new plates!!

Someone please explain to me how the average 'Joe Motorist' is expected to keep within the law, when firstly the information has to be paid for!
Agreed but, to be fair, it is mostly people who want non-standard plates who fall foul of the law. 'Joe Motorist' can simply take his docs into Hellfrauds and get a set of perfectly legal plates. Unfortunately this information (although available) comes at a premium & the information itself is also supplied with legal limitations ie; the sharing of.
My comany manufactures specialist mobility products & the laws govering such are complex to say the least.......documents of which all have to be purchased along with their subsequent annexes/sub references.
My point being that all such information should be readily available, on request, by all - for free!
I would have said those should pass, as they were likely the original plates on that car (assuming it's imported from N. Ireland). That type have been around here for years upon years.
Interestingly, my motor has dealer fitted plates (was registered new July 2008) and has no BS mark - in fact no markings at all, no postcode, no nothing. Looks like it's new plates time for MOT in a few years.

Where do you guys all find these draconian bloody MOT testers?
My plates are metal, the wrong size and have embossed american sized font letters.
I pass my MOT.
Because my MOT tester stringently tests the stuff that matters, brakes, lights, indicators, suspension etc.
My number plate is legible and reflective, just cos it isn't easily machine readable.....tough.
I wouldn't cause any problem for him as I'd just take the hit for driving with my "Show Plates" on.

It is now your duty to PH to go back to the MOT station, and armed with a printout from the MOT testers manual (link posted on previous page) ask the MOT monkey exactly what the reason for rejection is!
I bet he's being super anal and will sight this reason...
does not have black characters on a yellow background as the lettering on your plate is grey in places.

John - your plate is perfectly legal....your tester is applying laws that relate to vehicles first registered after 1st Sept' 2001.
Any info I can print off and show him?He said he's working to regulations issued in April this year?

They only made a slight change to the test which was checking the background of the plate...e. background overprinted or shadowed with text e.g. vehicle manufacturer name.
and.. c. any feature that has the effect of changing the appearance or legibility of any of the characters, so that the
true identity of the vehicle is less
easily established
They should have given you a reason for the failure - what was it?

Rear Registration plate has a feature which changes the appearance or legibility of the characters [6.3.4c]
Which he specifically stated was due to the 3d lettering, a little over zealous by the sounds of things!! I’ll have a chat with him and see what he says!

As Wayne says, 3D letters are legal on any car. The 2001 date for other markings has no effect on 3D lettering on any age car. These, the flag/logo and border are the only things you can 'personalise'.John Laverick]Front Registration plate has a feature which changes the appearance or legibility of the characters [6.3.4c said:

Will be waiting on the outcome of this, since I've been looking at possibly getting a set of new plates to go with a new reg. If MOT stations are going to start having issues with legal (AFAIK) 3D numbering then to hell with it.
I've had it up to my ears with MOT stations taking the Mick with piddy excuses to fail just so they can make an extra couple of quid from you.
Over. A. Barrel.
Barstewards indeed.
