7-seater petrol under £10k

First post! I need to buy a large 7-seater - my daughter uses a wheelchair.

My conundrum is, I mainly do city driving so diesels are out (or are they if I get the DPF maintenance cleaned?!) I occasionally do longer drives, maybe every month or 6 weeks.

However there just don’t appear to be many large 7-seaters for that price that are petrol. I looked at a Touran but it’s too small to fit wheelchair plus luggage.

Sharans are a good size but the only ones I found are Japanese imports. Went to see a few but the garage guys wouldn’t give straight answers so I don’t trust them.

How about Grand C4 Picasso? 2017.

Have seen some petrol Galaxys but they have the eco boost engine which apparently goes kaput.

All other 7-seaters seem more like estates with some extra seats in the back. Which means the boots isn’t much bigger than my current boot.

Suggestions?

I think you will struggle at this price point as it means they are all a certain age and nearly everything was a diesel at this period.

The Grand C4 Picasso is not much if any bigger than a Touran. I haven't measured but have the former and would be surprised if you noticed any real difference in size. They did a 1.2 petrol.

Yes, I think the problem is that I don’t have enough money for what I want/need! I’d consider a JDM car, there’s not many about though.

What are anyone’s thoughts on diesel in a city. I know it’s a bad idea….

Hmm, I thought the Picasso was a bit bigger than Touran. I’ll check carsized website before deciding whether to view.

Actually the Picasso does seem similar length to Touran. I think I’m after something that doesn’t exist

How about those van based 7 seaters, like a Berlingo, Doblo, Tourneo.

Big, practical and cheaper than car based 7 seaters.
But cruder and worse NVH.

I've got a 2011 Kia sedona. Older, but crazy reliable, 200bhp 6 speed auto diesel so more than enough power for pretty much anything, used daily for school runs and hasn't thrown a DPF in 2 years and 20k miles - just a service and set of brake pads. Take the rearmost seats out and you'll easily fit a chair in (you haven't said if you need 7 seats AND space for a wheelchair?). Sliding doors too for easy access. As stylish as a wig but for function, it's the best tool I've ever bought.
PS all seats are full size, individually recline, etc.

Thanks for these extra ideas, I will look at these too. We will occasionally have 5 people in car so need three full middle seats coz the kids are still in car seats. Back two seats can go flat to put wheelchair in boot.

Am not bothered about style at this point.

Interesting to hear that some people are ok using diesels in the city. All I hear is never to do that. But surely not everyone driving a diesel goes on long drives every week?

Have you checked what you're entitled to from the State, given your situation? I'm sure you have but it's not something to overlook. Plus, do any local LEZ to you make allowances for blue badge users etc? Diesel may not be the issue that it might be for others.

You may get a 68 plate Vauxhall Combo Life / Citroen Berlingo / Peugeot Rifter for under £10k.

All come in 7 seater option, the beauty is low insurance, masses of space and the 3rd row seats are proper size for adults, they can also be removed.

Have a good think about your usage, if you're doing a (100 mile round trip) long journey every month you should be fine BUT if it's going to be every 2-3 months then you may have a problem.

The JDM stuff is excellent, I got a Honda Stepwgn 5 years ago because I didn’t want a diesel and almost all of the euro market was at the time. Been really happy with it, there are specialists for parts and the internet for knowledge.

For a wheelchair user you also get nicely engineered adaptions done by divisions of the manufacturer that look and work so much better than the aftermarket conversions here. You also don’t pay VAT on imports with disability adaptions.

The answer is surely a low mileage older Previa in good nick? Stonewall reliability, vast space, I even like their looks!!

Thanks for all these suggestions. I couldn’t reply yesterday, could only post five times before it locked account for a day.

That petrol Galaxy looks good but I’ve been wary of ecoboost cars. I joined that Facebook group ecoboost nightmare and have been put off by all the horror stories.

I’m going to go through calendar and see how much I actually drive long distances, maybe diesels will be worth another look. We have ULEZ here but we can get an exemption due to disability.

VW Caddy maxi life is available as a petrol but generally would be a fair chunk over your budget.

The ford grand tourneo connect is available at budget but does come with the ecoboom engine.

OP, can you get anything through Motability?

Also, I'm presuming you need the space for the wheelchair while your daughter sits in one of the seats?

I wouldn't discount a diesel with a long journey once every fortnight.

Personally a decent mileage Galaxy would be ideal.

Yes, we could get motability but then you get less DLA. At the moment, I’d rather have the DLA. I’ve just seen a diesel s-max. Looks pretty big in the boot, not quite as big as a galaxy but still bigger than a zafira.

However, it’s diesel! And I only do around 5000 miles a year. Mainly don’t use the car during the week as I walk the kids to school and cycle to work. So many mixed messages about diesels. Some people say it’s a nightmare with dpf, others say that it’s fine and they’ve done city driving for heads without it being a problem.

Have also seen a petrol smax but the eco boost/boom problem puts me off. Are they really that bad?

I quite like the elysion etc, however I do also like a proper boot with parcel shelf.

If only I had three times as much money to spend…
