IMO - "(2) in-house ability to prosecute - losing the necessary objectivity" was a major factor above all, as they just felt they had all the power...and at that time in fact, they did!
AFAIK, they somehow still have that power. Not sure I have seen it stripped?
Clearly they should NO LONGER have that power, and indeed I hope and pray that the Police take action against those who have so clearly shown themselves to have been complicit in ruining so many lives

The Post Office don't have any special powers to prosecute. Any adult can initiate a private prosecution. Maybe the PO. its employees and agents could be deemed Vexatious Litigants and banned from starting any court actions.
"According to the Post Office website, Royal Mail solicitors are the earliest known formal investigators and prosecutors in the world, tracing their origins back to 1683. The Post Office continues to act as a private prosecutor, not under any specific power but exercising the general legal right to undertake prosecutions. Its investigators do have powers beyond those of the average private prosecutor including to access the Police National Computer, to undertake financial investigations to bring restraint and confiscation proceedings and to authorise surveillance to investigate crime"They have some special powers above and beyond the man in the street?

Chap on Friday 10th could be interesting. There is absolutely no way he can say that Horizon had no faults, or that he didn't know about them. Panamax said:
I don't understand all the legal ins and outs but when you see real police interviews on TV the suspect often replies "no comment" to every question, so faces no risk of self-incrimination.
What I don't understand is why these PO managers turn up, make apologies, start answering questions and then get accused of lying. It all seems very bizarre.
There are many ways of saying, "Your accusations are completely unfounded and there's no justification for your assault on my good character. Please stop it." Yet none of the PO people are saying anything like it.
Personally, i just think they genuinely believed that they were just going in to try and sort out the issues, rather than already being found guilty before they even got there. What I don't understand is why these PO managers turn up, make apologies, start answering questions and then get accused of lying. The more I watch this the more I want to see every one of these lying weasels in jail.
Clear cases of PCoJ and even perjury for some of them.
They are lying, the know they are lying, we know they are lying and I'm sure Sir Wyn does. I hope the findings of this enquiry are as scathing as they deserve and start the ball rolling on prosecutions.
The fact that some of the SPMs have not had adequate reparations paid is scandalous. They must have justice.
And once the dust settles on this, Alan Bates deserves a knighthood. He has devoted 20+ years of his life to this and fought every single day.

Looking forward to Vennels, I expect it will be more " I don't recall x, y, z, or not my remit, that was somebody else's job" I suppose using the 'I don't want to incriminate myself' answer could make you look guilty of something, especially in the media! Can just imagine the reaction the first time that one's used. Or has somebody tried that one already? Love the way Jenkins is described as ' former Distinguished Engineer at Fujitsu Services so is he no longer regarded as a 'Distinguished Engineer'?
Watched the start of Singhs evidence last night - really unbelievable and will enjoy ( if that is the right word) some more tonight.
Having given evidence in a Crown Court case (for the prosecution I hasten to add) the guy would be torn apart I suspect if he ever gets to court.
PCOJ with the evidence of the email data re printing etc.
As another barrister said to another witness "you are either lying or incompetent - which is it?"
