Shame McLaren have made a seemingly big PR blunder by enthusiastically hosting Trump in the garage.

Lots of yank fans kicking off BIG time on social media saying they no longer support the team etc.

They released a statement saying the FIA asked them to host Trump but the damage has been done.

Lando somewhat compounded it post race by saying it was 'an honour to meet Trump', 'you have to respect him and his work ethic' etc

Always the negative waves when RB dont win from honda-exige.

It's no different to when F1 raced in Russia and you had Putin front and center glad handing in the room of awkwardness. Calling the bloke a wker or telling him to f-off isn't the way they can go, no matter what they think.
Don't be a wally, I wanted Lando to win more than Max yesterday.

Great win for Lando! What a guy, don't think you can get a more popular winner.

Got a little lucky with a safety car fuk up, but definitely still deserved regardless!
The issue is Zak has gone on record as saying that politics need to be kept out of the sport when he very enthusiastically hosted Trump yesterday.

You can't compare Putin and Trump, one isn't a dictator (yet) who personally funded the race. You can't say no to Putin, you most definitely can say no to an actively campaigning politician who is in the midst of multiple scandals including rape and fraud.

Lando gets excused because he isn't American and is likely so far ensconced in his own bubble that he genuinely doesn't know the extent what scandals Trump is presently wrapped up in, Zak doesn't get the same leniency.

Just go look on social media at the comments - I would expect at least some of the McLaren sponsors to be reasonably upset.

McLaren statement was pretty good, but Lando´s was a big mistake. I am probably not the only one that had the pleasure of Lando finally getting his first win tainted by Lando saing it was a honor to meet Trump.
That's very disappointing from Lando.

To be fair from a branding POV Trump and McLaren share the same colour scheme.

Exactly, look at all the proper nonsense places they race, you can't exactly get vexed about Trump and then celebrate Max winning in China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Russia etc etc without looking like a complete plum.

Trump at F1...

That'll be the FIA trying to win over some of the devout southern states NASCAR audience then.

Apparently none of the teams wanted to host him and in the end it came down to whose livery matched best.

I say this without meaning to be insulting, but Lando has always struck me as one of the less-worldly and articulate of his generation of drivers in F1.

Russel (despite his inability to accept blame) has taken on responsibilities amongst the driver association, Albon seems switched on, Sainz and Le Clerc are more articulate (in English!), even Piastri is better in press packs IMO.

That's before you get into Vettel and Hamilton levels of personal politics.

Welsh and Scottish is the UK anthem same as England and Northern Ireland. We have a few English themes such as Jerusalem.
England is not Scotland, nor Wales.

Get yourself on youtube and check out their anthems, it will blow your mind.
There is no official Scottish anthem, Flower of Scotland is unofficial. I assume Wales is the same.

That's fair, I think, but you hardly need to be worldly-wise to know that it's a misjudgment to refer to defendant donald as someone who can 'be admired'.

Other than the anti Trump social media, where else?

Probably in the minds of any moderately-intelligent and reasonably-informed person who saw the appearance or read the comments from McLaren about it.

I can't remember the last time I was so happy for the winner of a GP. I've only just caught up on the race this morning, but that result has set the mood for the rest of the day.

Is it just me, but this weekend at times the Merc has showed it does have some pace in it, but the window to get it working seems very narrow and moves throughout the weekend. In qualifying Hamilton put in a cracking time in Q2, but couldn't get anywhere near it in Q1.
I think there is some pace on the Merc for sure. But given birth drivers have made numerous mistakes in it so far this season, I'm guessing it's not a predictable car at all and going off or having a shunt seems as likely as getting a semi- worthwhile result with it.

But sadly, whilst there are moments it looks like a reasonable car, it's miles away from the rest at the front most weekends.

Well done Lando.

As for the Trump thing, there is a very real affliction known by some as TDS or Trump Derrangement syndrone. The Trump thread is full of it. Any old thing, even if it isnt true, as long as its negative, appears there.

It doesnt belong on any other thread, please

It's amazing, and rather sad, to see the 'TDS' trope still being used, after all we've we've seen.

Not the first time a divisive politician has turned up at the F1, and won’t be the last time either.

Rather him than Vladimir Putin, Ilham Aliev, Tamim Al Thani, and many more world leaders that the drivers have been ‘asked’ to shake hands with over the years, and be nice about it. It comes with the job of an F1 driver, even if he doesn’t like the guy.

Whether you support Trump or not, he is a former US President.

I’m sure that Lando is just respecting the office, rather than the person.

Oscar seemed quick with only half the upgrades too

It'll be interesting to see if the car continues to be brilliant on the more race oriented compounds and a bit off on the softs.
Until the pitstop, Piastri was class of the field. Once on hards, he seemed to struggle. Perhaps the upgrades had more to do with tyre temperature. Norris was fast all the way through, and seemed to cope with the transition to hards without problems.
He drove well but I'm not sure I'd say class of the field. He's a great driver but has struggled with tyre management in particular and occasionally the wider dark arts of race craft. After Perez pitted, Lando was able to run comfortably faster than Piastri. It seemed to be another case of pushing too hard and overworking the tyres which somewhat colours my view of it - he should have been able to stay out another couple of laps like Norris, and it could have been him cantering to a win instead.

Fantastic win, well deserved and might shut up the ‘Nowin’ detractors for a while before they latch on to something else.

Joyous celebrations not least for the genuine response to the result by all who took part.

Pity some moron signed off Trumps appearance which left a bitter taste for me, exacerbated by the nonsensical statement they made afterwards as if it excused the decision.

Let’s put down Lando’s statement on the matter down to naivety and leave it at that.
