To be fair S22U had Exynos and S23U had Qualcomm (pretty much my primary reason for upgrading at that time) and the difference in the two in terms of performance was night and day.

YMMV of course, depends what you use it for, but as someone who uses the phone for pretty much everything except the few things I have to use a PC for, it was noticable.

It's possible newer Exynos chips are better of course - I never plan to find out.
In what way is it night and day better? Mine is an old s21 ultra exynos and I use mine heavily and it does pretty much everything I ask instantly or within a second, and its still very fluid and smooth, so I'm not really sure I can see how, for me at least, it could be night and day. Though I don't play games so there is that.

One thing to bear in mind, if it matters, is that the lower models have the Samsung Exynos SOC rather than the Qualcomm Snapdragon SOC in the Ultra. In the real world I doubt it makes any real difference but I notice that's really annoyed some of the nerds on Reddit.
Well that's disappointing, I thought they switched to all Snapdragon and now they've gone back?
I went out of my way to get a Snapdragon version of my S22U nerd

Would cost me about £900 to switch from 21U so not worth it even though I would get a free smartwatch with it. The 7 years updates are very welcome though I always thought that 3 years before forced obsolescence kicked in was a piss take when they were banging on about sustainability this and that, hope that continues with future models. I still have another year of updates and 2 years of security patches so will see those out I think.

There were rumours that some of the AI stuff would be sub only from 2025 but no mention of that in the unpacked event. Mrwhostheboss review was also saying that some of the AI he tried was a bit hit and miss, not as smooth and slick as the presentation made out.

Also another S22U user here. Think the S24U looks really smart but tbh there is no reason to upgrade a phone that was over a grand 2 years ago, not like it struggles with anything. I didn't make the step to search out Qualcomm one either.

tbh it makes almost no difference in day to day functionality with in app workings things that affect image, video and sound quality far more than the processor.

The only slightly notable exception between my Exynos chip and friends Qualcomm one is that his seems to munch through battery a bit quicker, which as the phone gets older will likely get more prominent.

Actually think the S21 is a significant downgrade on my S10 in many respects.

The screen in particular. The S10 screen never showed even a hint of screen burn even after literally 1000's of hours of use whereas the S21 that replaced it had noticeable screen burn within a year.

It's put me off getting another Samsung for now.
The Exynos chipset on the euro S10 was absolute gash though, total and utter irredeemable gash. The first phone I ever owned where I was having to charge the battery multiple times a day. At least the new S phones get a proper chipset same as they do in the USA

eta; just seen the post above? If they've gone back to Exynos, I'm not buying one so I hope that's an error? I know the FE phones are using Exynos but i thought the S line were not.

Maybe the S22U one wasn't fit for purpose compared to the S21U but after a fairly short while the S22U became a laggy stuttery mess, particularly with multi tasking and power intensive apps etc. Apps taking seconds to load up compared to no time at all, stuttering scrolling etc. etc. At first I thought maybe there was a software issue but the more I dug into it the more it seemed to be just the general performance replicated on many others. I don't game on mine either (except solitaire!)

'Night and day' might be a touch hyperbolic, sure, but put the S22U and the S23U side by side and it was more than noticeable.

Just ordered to replace my S23 Ultra. Couldn't hold myself back. £411.65 plus topcashback, sell the free galaxy watch should mean it's around £250-300 to upgrade. Not bad
Out of interest what features made you feel the need to upgrade?

I just had a look throught the features and aside from a mild processor bump, titanium and one of the cameras being very slightly different, everything else (like the AI) is set to trickle down to the S23 in due course. I couldn't see anything that would make me want to change from S23U, but I may have missed something.
The price to upgrade. £411 with free galaxy watch 6, then 15% topcashback means the price to upgrade is at most £230-250 when I sell the watch on. Even less if I choose to sell my S23U myself

I find waiting 2 years is the worst, for example S22U trade in is £370, that's another £230 loss in a year. This phone will probably lose me £230, meaning I can just have the brand new phone for the same price as if I kept the new one - the glory of samsung deals!

Fair play smile if mine performed as badly as you describe then I'd definitely be upgrading, although whether it would be to a Samsung after the experience you had would be another matter, as I don't think the experience you had was acceptable for such an expensive phone that is now only 2 years old.

I wonder if it was the RAM that made a difference, my s21 is the 12gb version and I think they dropped it to 8gb for the later phones. I'd always assumed 12gb ram in a phone was overkill though, given how much apps still reload.

Glad your s23 is a lot better smile

A fair bit of what I have seen re AI for the photos can be acheived with Google One and the additional edit tools that gives you.. so if its a choice between Google One and paying Samsung, I'd stick to google

I keep seeing Exynos being criticised in comparison to Snapdragon, but if I currently have an s22 with exynos without any particular issues, then presumably I would be happy changing to a s24+ with exynos, as I don't know what I'm missing out on? Processing speeds are never an issue for my relatively basic use, so does it really matter for me?

Mine arrives by the 24th. Titanium black 512GB via Samsung direct as it's currently selling for the price of the 256GB version.

I got my order in when TopCashback were still offering 15% cashback for last night only, then punched in the code to get the free galaxy watch which I will sell, should nab £180 for it. I then filed to recycle my 512GB S23 Ultra which sellmymobile offered £620 for.

So all that factored in, the upgrade will cost me £300 give or take which I am fine with.

The biggest plus for me is that now you can switch lenses when recording at 4k60fps, on the 23 Ultra it was only possible at 4k30. This is a huge benefit. And the better noise reduction in low light thanks to the better optics and imaging "engine" which looks to be just AI enhancements to produce cleaner images in low light etc.

Yes, you will be happy with it.

I think there were a couple of versions of the Exynos that were pretty bad, but they were long in the past. In the more recent past, they've been *slightly* outperformed by the Snapdragon, but these are very much first world problems. Yet the nerds on reddit and tech websites just won't have it that they are generally pretty decent these days - I regularly get downvoted over there for pointing this out, but who cares about them hehe. Yes, the Snapdragon is most likely ultimately the better chip, but 99% of the population won't know or care.

Well, this has taken me by surprise. The new AI features of the S24 Ultra? Neat, right? Well, you may need to pay for them monthly after 2025 if you want to continue to use them byebye

Have been nursing my broken screened s20 for a couple months now.

It fits I suppose. I watched the video on the S24 by Mrwhosetheboss and even though he didn't mention it just about every "AI feature" has already been available on the Pixel 7 and 8 series phones. And the clips featured in his video made it clear a lot of the 'AI' stuff was Google services, not Samsung.

If you can get a 10% code then that's one way, TCB is now 5% so looks like the 15% cashback only ran for launch night. Glad I ordered then lol. You can sell the watch that comes free, and Amex have Galaxy Store cashback too up to £280 if you go that route.

Same here, wasn't that bothered but my S21U is starting to need a charge during the day and I fancy playing with the astrophotography stuff.
