Thank you everyone for the replies.

I think I have narrowed it down to a Mondeo or a Superb.

Last question for both cars... Late previous model or earlier lower spec new model? This is more applicable to the Superb.

The previous Mondeo can come in Titanium X spec which has great wheels and lovely alcantara seats. Not sure I would want the very dated interior though.

I'd say the Mondeo but in all honesty go & test drive the Insignia at this price point it's nigh on the outright winner, you get a high spec reliable spacious car that's only drawback is the badge.

The later Mondeo was Titanium/Vignale for the top spec as they dropped the Titanum X from the previous gen.

I wouldn't rule out the Superb in hatch form, the boot is still enormous and you'd probably get a better example for your budget.

Good shout. Boot same floor size as the Superb wagon, just slightly less high up room at the back. Still huge.

I ran a 2015 Superb Hatch (diesel SE-L) from new to 110k and it was brilliant (running costs in my garage)

Sold it to a taxi driver who's taken it to over 250k.

Massive, comfortable and decent tech (mine had adaptive cruise, CarPlay, Bi-Xenon, electric seats etc). I'd have another one tomorrow

The obvious choice over a Mondeo or Superb would be the cool Audi A6 Avant. That’s something that you would really enjoy owning.

Another left field choice…Toyota Estima.

Can get a buggy straight in without even having to fold it down…

Not when he's after something bigger.

I am also looking at a family car with a massive boot that can take child seats, pram, bicycles and all other paraphernalia for family holidays. Currently looking at Berlingo XL / Rifter XL / Combo XL. Granted, it's a van, not a car. But the boot is cavernous (850 liters), you have 3 individual rear seats, and it could be had as a 7 seater if needed. I can't think of anything larger in the footprint of a normal car: the Berlingo XL is shorter than an Insignia!

A 3 Series should be adequate but it isn't. We have a 3 series and the problem is, if the car seat is behind me as a driver, I cannot get my seat into a comfortable position. When we have two car seats in a few months time, there will be no option to have the child seat behind the passenger.
Also, prams are huge so a double won't fit if we need to take anything else.

It is adequate man, just say you fancy a new car instead of creating convoluted rationale to justify it to yourself lol

Imagine how you would feel if someone knew very little about your life, but was adamant that you were wrong about something, well that's what you're doing.
