I’ve used a tape measure, record the distance between the wheel centre and the wheel arch lip. Also simple smile
If you do it with tape you can see it from inside the house, so you can order the parts without having to get dressed.

My P38 RR is currently receiving some love. 4 air bags, new Bilsteins and poly bushes. Hoping it fixes the death wobble and handling so bad you cannot go over 60 mph without having an accident. My D4 is a much better car but not as amusing or characterful as the older one. You really need both, and a trailer so whichever one is working can tow the other to the menders!

Tape on wheel arches is easy.

Fighting the in tank fuel pump isn’t easy.
And that’s only task one of the long list to do hehe

I don't know too much about P38s, but would a worn steering damper or draglinks/steering box contribute to the death wobble?

Either way, I hope it's solved! There's nothing so elating as fitting new parts to a car than it working properly again, and nothing is more soul destroying than spending time fitting new parts that don't fix the problem.

Good tip on the P38 and trailer - I've got an E34 5 series as a back up, but I think she'd struggle towing the disco.

I must admit I've been feeling a bit down about my Disco - firstly with handbrake problems which wasn't just a simple strip and adjust - it's going for a rebuilt module, and all new hardware, to a guy up north who's sole employ is to rebuild them. I don't mind working on it, I just didn't fancy that job... Plus the suspension issue. I nearly sold it and bought a stunning E38 728i...

Although I have just bought this to fix the third issue:

There’s merit in making it somebody else’s problem, my Disco needs a rear prop shaft bearing and new front brakes, as well as lower arms. I could probably tackle all these but I just don’t have the time.

I bought all the parts for my Rangie and stuck them in the boot before driving it to my mechanic. Also included a new steering damper as you suggest.

Running both cars alongside the Monaro is expensive, I also have 2 other vehicles to maintain, along with the wife’s car and daughter’s car. Silly really!

What were the scores on the (tape) doors this morning?

Mine took a couple of days to really show where the small leaks in the airbags were, so I'd expect yours to start showing similar today or tomorrow if you have a leak.

The steering damper is only there to stop kickback from ruts etc getting back to the steering wheel, it’s not to damp high frequency stuff like death wobble. Think Panhard bushes were the cause on mine.

Unfortunately I had to use the car yesterday frown I'm intending to repeat the test early next week (now I've fixed the window on my E34 and can use that...) as I'll be able to leave it a little while longer.

I hired one of those to take my Monaro to the garage when it was showing no oil pressure, turned out to be just the sensor but you cannot be too careful. Disco towed it like it wasn’t there. Brilliant cars. What’s going on yours?

I meant to update this actually - haven't had chance to do much with the air suspension, but on Wednesday morning I did do a trip up to Southport to have the EPB Specialist (highly recommend) remove and rebuild my parking brake module, rebuild the parking brake, and set it all up. All for £500 inc. rear discs! From there I went across to Leicester to pick up a seat and some other little bits for my E34 and then back home.

Left Wiltshire at 4am, got home at 9pm. My eyes were on stalks a little towards the end, but my D4 is just so nice to sit and cruise in.

This weekend I will be definitely hopefully finally replacing the coolant expansion tank that I just haven't got round to yet and has been sat looking at me...

Another little job ticked off the list - expansion tank.

Lower hose is a bit fiddly, definitely should have taken a recommendation I saw to get some remote hose clamp pliers. A little smear of Vaseline helped matters. Still, all done and bled up.

Hello OP

I couldn't help but notice you're also in Wiltshire.

I fancy a D4 for a daily to keep the miles off my M2. Now I'm not a stranger to LRs, I've had x2 Disco's (300 and TD5) and x1 Defender (200tdi) over the years, so I'm not going into buying a D4 blind.

Out of interest, do you mind me asking if you've found a good local specialist?

I'm fairly handy with spanners, but these days I much prefer spending my time not working on cars laugh

Thanks
NG
