Looking at getting myself into an M4 shortly. This one has popped up which ticks a lot of boxes; Right colour, spec is fine, m performance carbon accessories already fitted, maintenance pack, auto box ect...

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/used-cars/bmw/m4/used-...

Only problem is that it's registered as a Cat D. I have emailed them to ask about what kind of damage/repair was involved. Just wondered if anyone on here with a bit of knowledge regarding Cat D's could offer any advice on what the pitfalls/advantage could be? Or should I just steer clear of it altogether?

Any words of wisdom appreciated.

Can't you find a performance car that's not a cat D for £41k?

Mental.

It's more expensive than another M4 with nothing wrong with it. Not worth it imo.

Great buy. Go for it. Should hold its value nicely.

Quick look on Autotrader for that money reveals Nissan GTR, Jaguar XFR & XJ, Audi R8, BMW M5, Porsche 911. All non cat D.

Honestly, provided its adequately discounted to reflect the money you will lose trying to resell it Cat D wouldnt bother me. Insurers can claim Cat D for minimal damage and often do nowadays, I would be diligent ensuring that receipts are present and details of repair work done are there for a vehicle of this value but I really wouldnt let it put you off.

ANY cat C or D car should, (as a VERY general rule), be worth around half of the vehicles trade value. That is, if this BMW is worth, say, £50000 trade, then it's cat C or D value is £25000. What you don't know, (despite what the dealer might tell you), is what the degree of damage was - and more importantly, who did the repair and what sort of short cuts did they take. Like, for instance, fitting inferior parts, straightening out bent and damaged parts, not painting to manufacturers specification, etc., etc.
You would be VERY foolish to spend that sort of money on a vehicle of that value, and worse, when you come to sell it - you will have terrible trouble doing so for the self same reasons. Your buyers market is reduced by around 70% or 80% because of the few people that were prepared to take the risk.
Your insurance would also be affected because the insurance company will be very aware of it's status and history.

Just think the amount of damage that car must have had to make an uneconomical repair.
