Very very Lucky Boy Car Choice - GT3 v R8 v10 v Other
Discussion
Following many personal reasons, good, bad and ugly, I've now decided that life is too short and will enjoy a thoroughbred car again.
I have been blessed to experience some truly stunning cars in my time which will give some indication of my type of ownership (none of them second cars, all daily drivers)
205gti, integrate, sierra sapphire cosworth, 911 c2 s, M3 CSL (awesome), TVR Sagaris, Corvette ZO6, Megane R26, Nissan GTR.....
I'm on look again after a period away I would truly like to hear your opinions on next car. This forum is so opinionated so best place for me!
With a deep breath and a bit of luck my next car choice falls as:
997 GT3.1, 2nd generation maybe just possible, R8 V10, Nissan GTR (2011-12), AM V8 (V12 too pricey).
I want a car with character and noise that can be used day to day just!!! I could buy some cheap hatch if absolutely necessary but my feeling is if second car I won't use it!!
Any thoughts or experiences appreciated. Thanks

Sagman, you sound like me, almost exactly.
I'm in the same position.
I've tried the GT3, superb car but the clutch is heavy and would be a pain in traffic. The sound is superb, but I'd didn't quite tug my heart strings.
I'm going to try a Vantage soon.
I was also tempted by the GTR for the performance, but think the novelty would wear off (for me)
Not tried an R8, but personally think its more of an event than a GT3, if that's what you're after.

I'm in the same position, currently have a 996 GT3 mk2.
For me the Vantage was a massive let down, the GTR was very fast but to Nissan in side.
R8 would be a good daily drive, but if you could live with it the GT3 wins for pure driver pleasure.
Have you though about a 997 turbo, its next on my list to test.

I looked very hard at these cars when I last changed, the gt3 was the most involving car I have ever driven, but daily use would be wearisome ,clutch way too heavy ,far too much road noise .the r8 v10 hits every spot ,but I had a v8 which had been tuned and the performance difference was not enough to justify the extra money.
I ended up buying a dbs,but you are not going to go wrong with either of those ,but personally for a daily it's r8, for weekend thrills its gt3.

I think F-type Jag might fit your need when they have coupe, or even new Corvette C7(my next car).
(New corvette is supposed to have 8 speed automatic as option, 450+ BHP, more torque than in C6 Z06 in low revs, improved interior &gaggets, and vast use of carbon fibre to achieve the weight target of 3000 lbs.)

now thats what I call a shopping list....never mind owning, the fun you'll have buying!
My heart (and all the others bits ) would say GT3 but thats the only one on the list that Ive not driven so carnt compare. Of the rest - Id go R8, looks, goes and feels great, v special and not many on the road. GTR is epic, performance on another level, but as you say youve already owned. Not a fan of the AM but it does sounds and look good.
As already mentioned how about a 997 turbo?
Have fun test driving!

The "heavy" 997 GT3 clutch often boils down to two things - 1. It needs a new clutch "assister" spring or 2. It needs a new clutch.
I tried two before I bought mine and the first one was a mates car. Both this and the second car I tried at 911 Virgin had relatively light and feelsome clutches that were only marginally heavier than my C2S. The one I bought (based on not fitting into the carbon buckets of the 911 Virgin car) had a clutch that was about twice the weight of the first two (and needed a lot of strength to use) - but this was resolved with a new assister spring!
However, as others have said, for day to day it's the R8, but for a weekend toy the GT3 is car that you need to have on your list! The noise at full throttle (and closing on the limiter) still makes me grin like an idiot ......

Thanks Guys.
The last GT3 I drive was many years ago, it was a 996 comfort and I don't remember the heavy clutch but the ride was very hard and it needed to be kept on the boil all the time to make me smile. I know the 997 is a leap ahead and the sound is awesome.
I love the M3 CSL because it had such an edge if every department except brakes. The sound was stunning, simply stunning. The chassis was great, not too stiff and with the right tyres could be used all year round. it had back seats and a boot, perfect. Plus no one knew what it really was so could be used day to day and with customers.
But BMW won't touch this type of product again and i know the GT3 is closest too it. I will compromise re rear seats and boot space as life is so short and opportunities very limited re these vehicles. The R8 is current favourite and will try GT3 as well. I know I can make wild purchases and regret (e.g. ZO6 and Sagaris!) so I am interested in anyone's experiences in this area.
997 Turbo not me, I tried back to back with GTR and must say I preferred GTR on many fronts (it did have Miltek exhaust!).
Thanks Guys.

I have not driven the GT R so have no way to assess it from a driveability point of view but have driven the rest and have a 3.6 and 3.8 GT3 RS in the garage.
There is no difference in driveability between the GT3 and the GT3RS but you do get a standard roll cage and so on which may or not be what you want. The first gen RS is very low and has no front lift so you will scrape it. Assume that the front splitter is a consumable. The gen.1 car also has no stability control. The RS on cup tires is very tricky in the wet esprcially in standing water. In the dry its magic.
Of the three on you list that I have driven the Vantage is third in driveability but first in prestige, the Audi is in the middle, the the GT3 is the best driver's car with the least prestige and the hardest ride. The clutch is indeed heavy weven new and the difference with the Audi is startling driven side by side. The clutch on the Audi feels feather light. As a DD the Audi is the best compromise I suspect

Is the 997 GT3 RS any more diffricult day to day?
Ill go on classified and have a look around thanks.
how many miles do you expect to do a day? its my only car and i've found it fine for day to day, only problem i have found is the rollcage means that the rear seat space can't take any medium sized bags.....Ill go on classified and have a look around thanks.
