70th Anniversary of the Dam Buster raids
Discussion
Well only one film to be watched tonight; the 1955 classic, The Dam Busters. I shall be raising a glass to the genius that was Barnes Wallis, the bravery of the aircrew, to the 56 men that did not return and to the 2000 civilian dead, themselves casualties of the Nazi regime. Whatever your thoughts of the rights or wrongs of the raid it was an audacious plan put into action in a very short space of time.
"BY KIND PERSMISSION OF SEVERN TRENT WATER the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and 617 Sqn are planning to carry out a flypast on Thursday 16th May over the iconic twin towers of the Derwent Reservoir, recreating history as we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Dambusters. The aircraft will pass overhead the reservoir between 1300 and 1315 (local time) – 3 passes by the RAF BBMF and 2 by the GR4’s of 617 Sqn.
GENERAL PUBLIC
There will be no events on the ground and there are no tickets being issued. The aircraft will continue to carry out a flypast at Chatsworth – at 1320 (local time) this is an excellent viewing area for the general public as there are facilities in place for parking and spectators wishing to photograph"

Makes me ask if there's a similar thing in Germany.
Do they commemorate an epic run over xyz ?
The thing about the Dambusters is it wasnt and was never going to be an easy run. They could easily have set out and no-one made it to the target, nothing hit the target and no-one returned. As it was the losses were pretty high but they did strive to do the near impossible with something that had been unproven and near enough pulled it off.

Then again it was a surprise attack at low level after dark on lightly defended or undefended targets that weren't used to being attacked. The main achievement in my view was the design of, and correct release of, the weapon which called for an unheard of level of precision. Not far behind, the navigation to and from target.Simpo Two said:
