DANGEROUS driving Sloane square...

on my way home last night in my alpine-renault
i drove through sloane square, and did go a bit quickly around it causing some tyre squeel
few hundred yards later on sloane street (where i was probably doing around 38mph) i was pulled over
officer quite rude, said he could smell alcohol on me and that i looked under the influence of drugs!! but i didnt have anything to drink that night. He said i was driving dangerously.
I apologised and eventually he said he has made a note of my registration, and if any motoring offences were committed in the next year, then this offence for dangerous driving will also be put through....
can they really do that??
they didnt take any licence details, or my name or address.. just the reg.

I am not sure if i agree with that. We are all unlucky for living in a place where there is a risk of getting doen for S59 IMO!geeman said:

C'mon. Squealing around in a very built-up area and exceeding the limit where 10mph below the limit is generally prudent? I think that falls for consideration under the Road Traffic Act, 'Careless and Inconsiderate Driving. Subsection B, 'Driving Like A tt*'

Was it a proper PC or one one of the wannabe community coppers? If it is the latter they are not allowed to stop traffic except under section 147 of the anti-terrorism act. You would then have cause for complaint.
Did he actually issue you with a ticket? If not, then no Section 59 has been issued.
This law was essentially brought in to give the rozzers something to use against the growing number of yoofs hooning about on quad bikes in residential areas. However there are increasing concerns that plod is now abusing this new regulation, especially in certain forces where harassing the generally law abiding motorist earns big brownie points.

The complaint being what ?Someone asked me to stop ?
Anyone can 'ask' anyone to stop, only certain people can demand (you committing an offence if you don't) stop.

Incorrect. There are now "standard" powers for all PCSOs which include powers to stop and direct traffic/pedestrians on roads, under s.35 and s.37 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. These powers arise from the Police Reform Act 2002 and the Serious Organised Crime & Police Act 2005. This information is listed on the Home Office website. Surely unless he was formally cautioned at the time that he would be reported for consideration of prosecution for the alleged offence it couldn't be taken forward? Also I always understood that had the caution been given, an information had to be laid within 6 months for it to proceed. The verbal threat sounds to me like so much hot air. Presumably done in the hope that OP will drive like Miss Daisy for the next 12 months.
