My wife sprained her ankle very, very badly whilst playing tennis.

At first we thought it was broken, but it turned out to be just a sprain. Despite this, she was on crutches for over 6 weeks and couldn't put any weight on it. It's the first time I have seen a sprain that bad - but it can happen.

X-Ray will often miss things, especially if it isn't a weight bearing x-ray. I was kicking myself yesterday for not getting an x-ray on mine at the time but the Physio said it was very unlikely an x-ray would have picked up on it and they would have just sent me home diagnosed with a sprain

last Feb I did this

Went down stairs, swung around the banister 180 degrees but missed the bottom step and landed wrong.
Never known pain like it, agony beyond anything else I've ever experienced. Had a surreal moment when pulling myself into the living room, thinking "this really hurts".

Anyway I was in local hospital urgent car thing in 30 minutes. I had x-rays which showed no break and was in plaster within a further 30 minutes, given crutches and booked for a follow-up a week later

I was back in a week later and they wanted to cast it for another 6 weeks but I refused so we agreed on a moon-boot thingy. They examined it and diagnosed it as torn ligaments.

I'll never forget the pain over the first few weeks. The slightest touch at night put me in agony etc. I only had ibuprofen/paracetamol.

It took about 2 months in all to get off crutches. Even now, a year later I struggle going down stairs without shoes and get odd pains now and again.

Please, get it seen to because if you don't you might end up with a life-long ailment due to incorrect healing.

Just for the record, there are lots of interesting ways in which a bone can be broken or cracked without making it impossible to move. Telling yourself it can't be broken because you can twitch it is silly.

It's NOT wasting a medic's time to seek help when you're in that much pain, regardless of what the cause turns out to be.
Not you again! wink Can't you sleep? I'm so much better though. Pain at time of posting was unbearable, chew my way through my belt type pain.

I swear on my mothers nipple, it's gone now. I can't walk but I'm not lying here feeling I'm dying and it's the end of the world as before and I'm definitely not getting medics involved.

I'm fine. So so painful, when I woke up. Chap a few pages back laughed at paracetamol. It worked for me. I'm fine BVD, this thread about medics and hospital is doing my head in, like the phobia thread on PH, where maggots crawl out of every available space, but worse.

I can flap my leg around therefore I'm ok. And it Will be ok tomorrow, better enough to crack on as usual, which means it will be fine.
You great wuss. Nobody likes hospitals but not going when you're in that much pain in ridiculous and seriously risks long-term damage. I'm glad that the pain has gone (paracetamol is seriously underrated, it's one of the best drugs we have) and hope it stays gone, but if you need help, you need help.

I want laughing fella- merely meant that if paracetamol stoped all the pain, it hopefully wasn't too bad an injury.
I know my painkillers!

I've posted this on PH before, I'm sure. A female friends brother is an arms dealer and has lots on toys, including a plane he flew.He walked away from a car wreck and a plane crash with not much more than scratches.

But fell off the bottom step of a ladder.
The ladder fall led to several amputations higher and higher up his leg over the years, infection or something similar, I forget the details.

Moral of the story: on your way to war, strap some ladders to your car/plane/tank, they'll think you're a tradesman and let you pass then suddenly the enemy will have no legs when you massacre them with the ladders.

A while later, I sympathise with those who have torn ligaments and cant walk for 6 weeks... Im now walking. So no break, probably not even a sprain. Probably not more than a twist, but bugger me, it hurt.

No.
Very swolen initially, borderline tears initially, couldnt even move leg as foot was attached. Now... not even 3 full days later, hugely better.
I really thought I wouldnt walk for a month, or longer. Im fine. Hurts, I limp, but its nothing like the breaks friends have had, laid up for months, i went for a walk today. But at the time of posting, jeez, I was in pain.

I sound like a big girls blouse now. The pain was incredible. I have ugly scars half a foot long which didnt come close to hurting as much.
