I'd love to see the summons for that! Motorist charged with observing the speed limit. biggrin

So, do they want people NOT to speed, or to speed so they can get caught & fined/points and lectured on why speed is bad, mnmkay?
Read this... http://www.pistonheads.com/speed/default.asp?story... ...I'm not saying I'm in favour of such action, just that it HAS happened.

That's an entirely different situation to doing the "correct" speed in lane three. As far as I can see its impossible to get into any trouble for doing what the OP did

It's ingenious wink it will confuse the anti speed robots to the point their heads explode! Don't speed to stop others getting done whilst not breaking the law smile

It's down to interpretation in the end. If you were to be summonsed to appear, you would need to make a plea in response to the charge. Then it would be down to the mood of the bench, and like I said, interpretation of the law. Entirely possible that it would happen too, in some Police Force areas, if there were video evidence pointing to it being a deliberate act by (for example) the OP.

Careless/inconsiderate driving would be another possibility, if the Police officer/camera operator or their superior/supervisor were to be caught in a bad mood. Offences detected, and prosecuted successfully are good for the targets/figures don't you know? wink

So I would get prosecuted for not speeding then? Inside two lanes had trucks doing 56mph anyway.

I'd rather they enforced the limit somewhere where it actually matters rather than punishing people for 78mph. Revenue collection at its most obvious imo.
I would rather they pulled over the tailgating Bacensoredds and added a few points for trying to force others to exceed the limit (we get them in the slow lane too). unfortunetly they appear to be more concerned about speed, suppose it is easier to prove.

I've done this a few times now, it's funny how people quickly turn from angry into extremely grateful!
I would have been one of those people. Fair play to the OP.

Me as well.

A couple of times in my life I have had the fortune to be 'held up' at just the 'right' time. Good on you OP.

All the same, somebody coming out with a comment saying this part of the M40 is safe is far from right.

A camera might not have stopped those incidents but regardless it is an accident hotspot.

Reading through this, it's pretty obvious the real reason the OP has done this is nothing to do with doing a good deed and preventing random strangers who he has never met and will never see again from having points, it's all about making sure the cameras can't catch someone so they can't get the revenue.

So, an admirable task, but not exactly done for the good deed reasons the OP states, and done more out of spite of the camera van which is a completely different reason altogether!

The M4 is amazingly bad for accidents, especially around J15-18 for some reason? I think it's people trying to get away from Swindon as fast as possible!

I'd have been appreciative of the OP; having gotten very irritated earlier on.

Bit harsh.

It's a camera operator. I'm sure that most of them aren't particularly enamoured about the job they do - I can think of few more boring things than sitting in a van all day pointing a camera at people.

But, much like Traffic Wardens, it's a job. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to turn one down out of principle...
Even if it was literally the only job available, I'd rather starve. Speed camera operator = ccensoredt IMO. No exceptions.

It's not really holding people up when that's the speed limit anyway though is it... regardless, I would have rather been held up than have points on my license for going 78mph!
It's not up to other drivers to dictate the speed that traffic flows at.
Oddly enough in a way it used to be, 85th percentile etc.

I appreciate this was not the point you were making, hence including the post you were replying to, relevant to the OP's points though.

You can tell all the butthurts in this topic who have been done for speeding in the past.
If that was directed at me, you may be surprised to learn that I've never been prosecuted / ticketed for any offence. However, the prominence of cameras and all the BS surrounding them means that I probably will be (for exceeding what are increasingly draconian limits on country roads, dual carriageways and motorways) in the future.

In fairness to scamera vans (in these parts at least), they don't really give a crap for those doing 80 - I've passed one several times in excess of 70 and never had an NIP. The head of the local SC Partnership used to say that disregarding those who were within 10% of the limit took out 90% of the grief he got from whingers who wanted to argue the toss. I think they are more after the 80-plus brigade.

I'm not defending them particularly as sometimes they operate in near zero traffic density but the regular Bank Holiday weekend slot is plainly designed to quell any over-zealous types as they head off. After all, it only takes one George Michael to block a motorway and there is always one as*h*le about.

I was on an "A" type road in France last weekend and was flashed by at least 3 or 4

locals going opposite direction warning of "les flics" little speedtrap ahead.

Unlikely would have got that many warnings from Brits at home....nono

I wasn't speeding anyway BTW.

Wouldn't it be funny if the van was there not to catch speeders, but to catch people hogging the right hand lane... the OP would have given them a whole load of new victims biggrin

(I know they don't bother to book people for not keeping left and hogging the right hand lane. But it's about time they did... might get the roads working how they should!)
