Just a heads up, it's the DfT that make those choices, not SWT.

Rubbish isn't it?
The pricing, the timetabling, or the crap trains?

Or all three?

Apologies for the crap reply - I was cooking!

Err, what trains are bought etc.

And the price hikes.

how come the trains in the rest of civilised Europe run on time, are clean and nice?

£1900 for Chislehurst to London and I walk to the station... Still think it is a pisstake for a 21min journey, but at least I get a seat...

I could add £10k to my salary tomorrow if I worked in London, but after tax, season ticket costs, station parking and running a cheap car (since there's no public transport where I live at commuter hours), I'd be the grand total of £96 per month better off.

If I actually could guarantee that I would use the train every day then a season ticket would cost £1500. Doesn't appear good value compared to some as it is an 11 minute ride between 2 stations, but I benefit from walking from the house to the station and then at the other end the station is actually attached to the side of one of the carparks at work.

The train also works out cheaper than the car as I have to pay a toll to cross the bridge on the way home.

However, once I have factored in holidays plus working away on our other main site I just tend to pay as I go.

I wouldnt be surprised if either its a myth that they run on time and are clean and tidy or its because ours are much busy with less turn round time.

There is very spare capacity on the rail network particularly around London in the rush hour it only needs one small thing to go wrong and it soon snowballs.

Interesting. I spend just under £3k - on fuel for a 30 mile each-way commute.

Train would be £62.90 per week or £2,516 for the year, but the difference between weekly and annual is a lot less once you take holidays and such into account.

Nearly excellent detective work. However I think Pilning only has 2 trains a week (1 in each direction) stopping there these days. I get off at the next station along, which is Patchway.

Mine is now up to £4980 (without tube). Tube takes it to £5860, so I walk the mile from the station to the office and back.

It's horsest. Having worked abroad they are often worse. In fact, non-A/C carriages with daily late running trains in Italy is one of my worst ever commuting experiences.

The UK has one of (if not, the) largest mixed traffic network. In many cases Europe has the luxury of separate lines - which makes for easier maintenance and optimal track geometry.

My sensible daily is a Saab 9-5 Aero Estate sitting on eibachs & bilsteins with added Noobtune Stg3 goodness.

I also have an S1 Elise 111S for when it isn't snowing.

A lot of it is a myth but our season tickets are massively more than most of Europe. In Germany a Bahncard 100 is EUR4080 which is unlimited nearly everything at any time, which effectively is a cap on season tickets. When I was in Aachen last December they were giving everyone Stollen for the minor delays from building work at the station. First Great Western will give a mumbled apology for ruining your day.

Did you know you're not allowed, by law, to wash your car on a Sunday in Germany too?

I think I win - if you can call it that.

Standard class ticket from Norwich to London Liverpool Street is £7184 for this year. I have paid for the full year but won't be using it for the duration, thank God. I know bucket loads of people who do though and it is a mare of a journey.

I hope you more than make up the £7k in tickets with at least £15-20k in more wages as that is one journey I would not be doing.
