It’s that time of the year – Train ticket renewal.
Discussion
If I actually could guarantee that I would use the train every day then a season ticket would cost £1500. Doesn't appear good value compared to some as it is an 11 minute ride between 2 stations, but I benefit from walking from the house to the station and then at the other end the station is actually attached to the side of one of the carparks at work.
The train also works out cheaper than the car as I have to pay a toll to cross the bridge on the way home.
However, once I have factored in holidays plus working away on our other main site I just tend to pay as I go.

how come the trains in the rest of civilised Europe run on time, are clean and nice?
I wouldnt be surprised if either its a myth that they run on time and are clean and tidy or its because ours are much busy with less turn round time. There is very spare capacity on the rail network particularly around London in the rush hour it only needs one small thing to go wrong and it soon snowballs.

STJ to Pilning? The train also works out cheaper than the car as I have to pay a toll to cross the bridge on the way home.

Nearly excellent detective work. However I think Pilning only has 2 trains a week (1 in each direction) stopping there these days. I get off at the next station along, which is Patchway.
b
ks, I meant Patchway. Yes Pinling has 1 either direction on a Saturday. What do you drive, if you dont mind me asking?

t. Having worked abroad they are often worse. In fact, non-A/C carriages with daily late running trains in Italy is one of my worst ever commuting experiences. The UK has one of (if not, the) largest mixed traffic network. In many cases Europe has the luxury of separate lines - which makes for easier maintenance and optimal track geometry.

A lot of it is a myth but our season tickets are massively more than most of Europe. In Germany a Bahncard 100 is EUR4080 which is unlimited nearly everything at any time, which effectively is a cap on season tickets. When I was in Aachen last December they were giving everyone Stollen for the minor delays from building work at the station. First Great Western will give a mumbled apology for ruining your day.Rostfritt said:

£1900 for Chislehurst to London and I walk to the station... Still think it is a pisstake for a 21min journey, but at least I get a seat...
Good effort, I often struggle at Petts Wood!£1900 for Chislehurst to London and I walk to the station... Still think it is a pisstake for a 21min journey, but at least I get a seat...
