Just to resurrect this thread.

After all the difficulties with test drives due to Covid, a lack of cars due to semiconductor shortages and delays with getting my garage door sorted, l have, this week, pulled the trigger on a ........ MANUAL!

It's in Velocity Blue with the Custom 2 pack and rear spoiler. Deposit paid (a very reasonable £250), decent(ish) discount and a salesman who actually returns calls as promised.

The only snag is l have absolutely no idea of a delivery date. Best guess is somewhere between Jan and July of next year!

Further update!

I got a call from the salesman on Monday saying that he'd been looking at the online documentation to see if there was a build date for me yet and noticed that the colour had been changed for Velocity to Grabber Blue.

Upon investigation, it transpires that the 2022 model colours have had some significant changes with several colours dropped altogether and some new ones introduced but no notification if this to UK dealers and Ford UK web site still shows the old colours as available.

I wasn't that keen on Grabber Blue and following a discussion with SWMBO we have settled on Atlas Blue instead. He has confirmed this today - still no indication build date though.

Just for info in case anyone else is considering placing an order, this link gives details of the changes https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&amp...

Just a little addition for this thread.....

Ford have announced today (10th Dec 2021) that as of the 13th December @5pm they will no longer take orders for the EU market of the manual due to a new regulation called "Drive by Noise" effective from July 1st 2022.

Autos will still be available and orders already placed for a manual will be honoured

just as well we're not in the EU then nuts - or is this (yet another) instance where we've agreed to follow their diktats?

If you fancy running a convertible 5.0 GT manual whilst you wait let me know as may be reluctantly selling mine (2016). I suspect you could run it for 12-18 months and not lose much or any money!

Finally wading into this thread as although I'm probably a year or two away from making the purchase, I'm seriously starting to lean towards a Mustang as my next car, possibly even my forever car. It would be the V8 GT Convertible.

I probably need a whole thread to consider some of the other aspects, but on the gearbox question specifically-

My driving is mostly town based, or, if it's not round the town, I'm going on a 350 mile motorway slog to visit family. My current Volvo S80 Auto is perfect for this, it's lazy, easy, sometimes a little dimwitted (the Polestar map helped a little), but generally painless. The car almost never sees spirited country roads etc.

I've read enough reviews to know that the convertible isn't really a drivers sports car, but quite honestly my current car isn't a drivers car at all and I love it. I enjoy just floating over the potholes and generally crap roads, and I don't really rag it round corners much.

The auto Mustang (facelift 10 speed) is basically going to suit my driving style and requirements for something that floats around town isn't it?

I have a feeling that going back to a manual when I'm used to Adaptive Cruise doing most of the work on the motorway all the way down to a standstill may be a pain... But then today I read a couple of reviews specifically slating the new 10 speed box. Despite that, I figure that it may not be as good as a PDK but it's probably a lot better than what I've got now anyway.

Does anyone have the auto and regret it? If so, why?

a couple of years ago I had an ecoboost Mustang in the US as a hire car and loathed the 10sp - I have no idea if the V8 is better with it or not. For comparison I love the 8sp ZF in the Challenger (though again not comparing like with like since that's also a V8)

It's worth bearing in mind that because of the torque, even around town you're not changing gear constantly.
The car will pull in 6th gear from around 20mph.
I only find manual a pain in stop start traffic, otherwise I tend to stay in 4th for town driving which will take me from 10mph up to illegal speeds. The clutch is heavy though so in heavy traffic its a right pig.

The facelift cars have adaptive cruise control even on the manuals. My girlfirends Swift Sport has this too, and I've never had a problem with it dropping to a speed too low for the gear.

If you go Auto, I'd recommend a pre facelift car with the 6 speed over the facelift with the 10 speed. The 10 is the better box but there are just too many gears and it's constantly changing. To me it sounds and feels very odd. The 6 speed is much nicer in that aspect, although it's not a benchmark for gearboxes by any means, although PDK is the auto I'm used to so naturally compare to that.

Auto for me and that’s coming from a die hard manual driver!

I passed my driving test 50 years ago this month when I was 17. In those days automatics were only for people who were not capable of manuals. I only switched to autos 5 years ago and would never go back.

Mine is a 10 speed Mach 1 and I love it. So easy to drive. We went down to Cornwall in it last November, a distance of 380 miles from our home in North Norfolk. I enjoyed every minute of it. No effort at all.

The Mustang is a big car, more of a tourer than a sports car, not the sort you can throw around corners, IMO. Personally, manuals are best for small cars like a Lotus or MX5, or an Ultima GTR, which is what I had about 15 years ago.

Jay Leno tested the latest Mach 1 auto last year. Worth watching on YouTube if you Haven’t already seen it.

I'm going through the same conundrum - looking at a facelift GT coupe as my next car and have gone from "it must be a manual" to now being pretty much settled on the 10 speed auto.

My thoughts are that I want to use the car most days which includes a work commute which is a mix of dual-carriageway & stop-start traffic in town, along with longer road trips to see family in Cornwall (280 miles each way) and up to Scotland / Wales etc.

Already have a TVR Tuscan as a fun weekend toy for proper driver involvement, and my wife has a superb 2020 Mini JCW which is also a manual. So the idea of a big Mustang with a smooth auto really appeals- i.e. a comfy GT that looks good and sounds good. It doesn't need to try and be an out-and-out sports car as we have the Tuscan for that.

Will be following the comments on this thread with interest! biggrin

If I was to buy another 5.0 GT it would be the auto this time. It may have just been mine, but my manual suffered a lot of drive train shunt at low speeds in traffic.

Interesting - unfortunately I live in Brighton and a pretty decent chunk of my driving can end up in stop/start traffic, which is a pretty big consideration I suppose. That's one of the reasons I love the Volvo. As far as ACC is concerned, on the motorway runs I use it right down to a standstill, and it's quite nice to not have to move my feet at all.

I'm thinking that with the 10 speed perhaps the paddles would help overcome any sensation of it constantly hunting for the right gear...

I will have a look at it thanks! You're right, I'd see the Mustang as a cruiser rather than a sports car, which is why it appeals!

What was it that you loathed about it? I've heard about it constantly shifting which is an unwelcome sensation. Albeit I'd hope the V8 experience is better...

Interesting, that would wind me up given I will spend most of my time in traffic.

Sounds a very similar use case to me (although I don't even really get the dual carriageway bit!)

Watch this thread in about two years for when I've finally saved up enough to get one!
