Little update with the grass lods, decided to go with a green tundra (Whiterun) grass and with green lods you don't see the join and no horrible vanilla game short draw distance before grass and tree suddenly pop in.

In case you are a little puzzled as to what I have done here is a shot of the normal grass with grass lods a different colour (you need to make them match) to show how short the normal draw distance is before the lods take over, obvious straight lines and in this case a square edge.

Grass is drawn normally just up to that point above the gatehouse, then the lighter green grass is the generate lod, which if they weren't there (as with the vanilla game) it would just be flat low resolution ground texture like the screen below which is pre-grass lod.

I've just started playing this beauty of a game again, however with all of the mods I've got loaded I'm only getting around 30FPS with my trusty old GTX 970 - can anyone recommend a GPU upgrade (suitable for both this and Fallout 4) which won't break the bank? Thanks smile

Some of the sites I use, be aware stock of graphics cards is very low and has been for a while.
No idea when things will get back to normal stock levels.

Comparison tool, to see how your 970 compares to what's available, if anything.

I've got an EVGA 980ti which I could pull out / post. It's only marginal gains from your 970 but it's in an old PC which I was going to give to charity so let me know

As an upgrade the GTX 1080 from Ebay maybe. It's not a good mining card so they aren't interested in them. Prices £350-£400 avoid blowers and water cooled ones.

You could get cheaper on auction.

Ps. Minus the £80-90 you will get back selling your 970.

Removed link as it changes, but check Ebay.

I love this game. I'm Level 39 on Xbox series x.

It's the first game that's really captured my imagination in years.

I'm looking forward to the upgrade.

Despite having this installed for years I've only just started playing recently and have currently sunk 30 hours into it, probably picking up way too many quests as I'm in the Thieves Guild, Dark [something] Assasins, Werewolf, etc. I'm playing as a sneaky archer and am enjoying it so far, maybe next time I'll play as a mage if I can figure out how to learn new spells!

Are there any 'must have' mods? I'm playing the Special Edition on PC (via Steam), it's a GTX 970 so not modern but if there's something that will make the game much prettier without too much effort that would be ideal!

Apparently the new version, coming out next month, will break the current modding system, so you may want to wait to see what happens.

It'll be a new version of Skyrim, not a replacement. You can still play the original Skyrim and Special edition separately, they both have separate modding scenes so mods will be converted for the new one. And if it's anything like the Fallout 3 update it's been patched already - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/24913

Ps as for making it look good, try an ENB. There are two types, ones for the default weather and ones for specific weather mods, so your choice. The main thing it adds is better shader support removing the nasty shadowing on NPC faces and adding better sharpness and other effects. They can make nights and dungeons darker, so you need to use torches. When installed you can flick between ENB on and off so you can see differences. You will lose 3-5 FPS using one but I wouldn't play Skyrim without one.

So if I have Skyrim Special Edition on PS4 (the one with all the DLC) do I get the new one for free?

Mmm... Not played for 6 weeks or so I was waiting for the anniversary edition. The extra content is good but I was hoping for a decent boost to the graphics.

Is it just content or are the texture's etc getting a boost ?
