Could they have not just got a big sheet, paint and some rollers? I never really understand why CGI/photoshop is used for things you can do with considerable ease?

Lighting, thats why, be almost impossible to get uniform colours on that flag if it had been a simple backdrop.

As SKR says lighting. Some lighting rigs cost tens of pounds to rent you know! hehe

basically nothing in the photo is real because you can be sure the woman has be photoshopped to hell.

So how would you mask out the flag if you wanted to change the colour/transparency and shadow details if it had been shot as part of the BG?. Same a 3D cgi plates, renders are created from different plates for control over the overall image/animation, this is where Renderman is king. Good to see something done properly for a change.

BTW i create CGI for films/games for a living wink
