I bought a new ride-on mower at the weekend - it's a mulching type Stiga thing and the guy at the garden centre told me it wouldn't be any use for the first cut of my paddock (the grass is very long and is lying flat) so he has loaned me a big Iseki Lawn Tractor (SXG model) for the first cut.

I'm having a bit of trouble with it!

Starting is fine, the throttle, hydraulic collector lift etc are all obvious and it's obvious how to raise and lower the deck but it's crap! The guy told me that it would cut just about anything, even long flattened grass. There's a big lever above the right rear wheel and I can't work out what it does. The (self-confessed) non-expert who delivered it told me it was the hand-brake but it's either broken or something else.

Any ideas? confused

Is it the lever that engages the blades?

Well I must admit, I wondered that but there's another lever that looks like it should be engaging the front PTO (although the PTO sgaft doesn't bloody turn!). With that lever in the "on" position, it cuts a little bit better than with it "off". So I assumed that was the one which engaged the blades.

Problem is, the guy who owns the place I bought it from isn't going to be in tomorrow and it's being collected tomorrow night. Doh!

IF (?!) the mystery lever does engage the blades then, with it off, would the blades still turn enough to chop up some grass?

confused

Only as much as the velocity of the tractor dragging the blade across the grass would cut.

Keep the revs up, and as you pull/push the lever, the revs will drop as the drive belt engages. If that happens, it is the blades lever.

I'm on my second Iseki and they do a good job even on long grass. I think the lever you refer to engages the blower (which fills the grass collector) You will probably have bunged up the rear of the cutting deck if you haven't had it on, lower the deck and there is an access plate towards the rear.

That'll be the lever that kills a Smurf every time you pull it then.

Oops.

Sorry.

Is it the lever that switches on the hoover that sucks all your cuttings up?

(That's what it does on the Iseki at work!)

HTH Rod.

st, I bet that's what it is. lever up for on? Or up for off?

And the blocked tube would explain crap cutting.

It's definitely too dark now so I'll try in morning before I go t'work.

Ah well, the problem was that the tube kept on blocking (like every 2 minutes!).

So I just used my mulching mower and left all the cuttings on the ground.

Have been over it again trying to cut up the cuttings if you see what I mean (the grass was pretty long!)

Soooo. I've now got a big patch of grass covered in clippings, anyone know what kind of machine I could use to collect them? Or should I not worry about it?

I think its the Diff lock for if you get stuck or it makes the transmishion free wheel so you can push it if its hydrolastic. I just purchased a Stiga Park Ranger with a pro mulching deck and its fantastic, been using a 45hp tractor and 7 ft tow behind up till now, fantastic for the paddocks but crap on the front lawn.

If you are still having problems, then there is only one solution.

You'll have to read the manual.

I'll wager it's the collective. Pull it and you'll go upwards nuts
