hence me looking at cavity insulation in another thread....
Are things like this a good economy? Could be worth looking into things that are wrong with the house in terms of keeping it warm, see if there are any easy wins in keeping a little more heat in.
It might be worth checking out the loft insulation. My parents recently had theirs redone free through a grant for pensioners as the old insulation was said to be not up to the latest standards.

Mine was £440 frown

That was from start dec til end feb. 4 bed house with two adults and two young kids. We did have the heat on a lot over this period. I don't recall a colder winter in recent years.

Stunned when I saw the bill!
Did you pay it though?

Just had my gas bill through for the period of 18 Dec 08 - 25 Feb 09 and I'm a little shocked as to how high it is...

There is just me and the lady in the house which is a small 3 bed end of terrace with a combi boiler (that is A rated) and a gas oven. Yet, somehow we've managed to use £226.10p in gas over that period. Electricity is £56 for the same period, and both are based on actual meter readings, I though prices were coming down frown

I'm on Click Energy 6 with the paperless billing option if that helps for comparison.

Are there any tips that people can suggest to look at bringing this bill down, or are my expectations of what it should cost all wrong...
I hope my gas bill (due in the next week or so) for the last quarter is only £226.10p. (Two of us in two-bed bungalow).

there are b&q/british gas deals on cavity insulation for 200 quid at the mo. Loft insulation was re done to latest spec when I refurbed the loft conversion..

Yep, we just had loft insulation done for £199, B&Q jobby but most other retailers will offer the same price too, parts of our loft had nothing in them, just old carpet. the draft proofed the loft hatch too, we had to turn down the heaters by a couple of notches the day after, so it should be paying for itself soon I hope.

The old loft insulation at my parents place had only been fitted around 15 - 20 years ago. The latest insualtion seems a lot thicker, plus I would imagine there might have been upgrades in the materials in that time. They too have felt an improved difference in heating insulation.

Don't forget that if the lunacy proceeds as planned, between now and ca. 2027 there will be staged increases in gas and electricity bills to pay for ecomentalist windymills and similar nonsense amounting to ~£300 flat rate per household per year. Plus another ~£200 in associated costs to companies which will get passed on to customers, and via green taxes, and the rest. Lube up and bend down, or perhaps start to get serious in telling the feckwits in charge that their junkscience idiocy won't be tolerated any longer.

I submitted my own meter readings in Nov on line, the direct debit account had fallen behind by £150 on combined gas and electric from e-on. To avoid any nasty surprises on the next bill I made an interim payment by debit card , effectively starting with a clean slate. Imagine my delight when the bill came a few weeks ago £886 , with £400 paid by direct debit I still owe them £486 I cant believe I've used close on £300 per month on gas and electricity for what is a modest 4 bed bungalow with D/Glazing , loft insulation and a newish combi boiler. Aye that's me wavey I wondered if you knew who I was wink

Yes they did everything, they did a site survey first and told us what we had was 'adequate' and we had to just clear all the rubbish out of the loft for them to do the work,
unfortunately we did not find any treasures, just a crap mirror and an old carpet frown

Tidy up my loft? That sounds like hell. I'm sure all the crap I have up there is perfectly good insulation anyway!!

Could be worth looking into, might leave it until after the summer though.

The bill takes the p155 as it goes on about BG's lower prices. WTF.

Crikey these figures are high yikes

I'm with BG dual fuel (capped 2010) and pay £35 Elec and £25 (recently automatically reduced from 30 odd) gas per month. Always in credit by at least £100 or so... hehe

3 bed semi with combi...

Cheers

£75 per month over the last three months doesn't seem to bad to be honest, especially when one considers prices have increased by 40% of late.
