Thought it might be interesting to start individual threads for our preferred breed of dog, to share photos / stories / hints & tips. It could prove useful to existing and prospective owners.
This is ‘Maverick’ our 11mth old Boxer. He’s quite a character, as are all Boxers, the comedy Jester of the canine world. He’s our 2nd of the breed having lost our first in Jan.23’ aged 11.
As a breed, they’re great loyal companions and provide lots of entertainment. Be aware though that they are full on and very powerful dogs. Easy maintenance due to short hair coat and cheap to run
for a large breed.
They’re very athletic and love a good walk, but are not as exercise dependent as other working dogs like Collies, Spaniels etc.

From a pup at 5Kg, he now weighs 35Kg and will likely be 40Kg+ fully grown. A big lump!!

They are my favourite breed. We had one as kids, then a cousin bred a couple of litters so there were a load around friends and family. It was great seeing them all as I'd known them as pups do they all remembered me. Lovely dogs.
They are a fun breed, especially as puppies. Such characters from day 1.

When I was a child, my grandparents had a boxer, Bruno. Not named after Frank but the pipe tobacco my grandad smoked, St Bruno! Fantastic dog, very protective but soft as anything. I was amazed how many people would be scared or wary of boxers, probably because they are large and muscular but I’ve never met an aggressive one. Full of character and loyal, just love the breed.

A car, parked on the street, was continually sounding its horn with the noise echoing between the shops. I could see the offending car and could see a crowd beginning to congregate looking inside the vehicle. Fearing there was a medical emergency, I quickened my pace to get to the car and assist if needed. When I got to the front of the car, I looked in the driver’s window to see this.
His owner had disappeared to the shops and left him in the car. Paw on the horn, everybody outside the car giggling and laughing at his antics. Just sums up the character of a boxer - brilliant

Typical Boxer behaviour, they can be such dick***ds, but you end up laughing at their antics.
You are right that some people, and other dogs are wary of Boxers. They do have a presence about them and are very nosey / social.

Ahhh, Boyce is a good old boy. It’s sad they have to age, but hoping he has plenty more time with you despite the medical issues.
This is Rafferty our last boy, who we lost in Jan. last year aged 11. He was a smasher of a dog too!

Sorry for your loss of Murphy - Lovely boy!My wife and daughter are pushing for a 2nd Boxer, but I’m not sure I can manage the chaos!!

He’s hanging in there - we can’t take him to the park anymore or long walks cos he has heart problems. he has fits and falls over when he gets excited it’s difficult when we have visitors or knocks at the door.
He loved the park and I think he inspired a lot of people we used to meet at the park and on walks to get boxers as when I got him he was the only one that went to the park but now there’s at least 6 young boxers that he used to play with.
Great to hear you’ve inspired others to get Boxers. They really are a great breed, but a bit marmite - people either LOVE or don’t get them! The people who don’t like them normally own a CockerPoo or some other vanilla breed!! Nuff said! and they all seem to have the same temperament- I’ve not come across a bad one. In Germany they are known as the Nanny dog, and I remember mum saying our one would keep checking on us the whole time we had a baby sitter.
It’s great to see other people’s appreciation for the Boxer on this thread, and your lovely pals.
‘Nanny Dog’ does ring true with the breed - they are very loyal and protective of their family (pack). When walking, Maverick is always checking that all humans are present and will wait if someone drops behind. He also sleeps with us - not the best idea, as he’s over 5 foot fully stretched out, and will physically push you towards the edge of the bed!!!
This is what we have to deal with and wake up to!!
