As the name implies, Air rifles have rifling. Therefore I don't buy this one.
I'm interested why you think the rifling is relevant? Shirley, once the pellet hits the razor blade it's rotation is stopped?

I buy it - you can actually see a small chunk of the pellet that's been taken off by the back part of the blade.

And no-one said rifle, the OP and thread title clearly say pistol...

If its real its very impressive, much more so than the usual high speed photo's of a water balloon being pierced.
Why is it much more impressive?

Surely both are just a case of set up high speed camera----> pull trigger.

If you click on a topic and it doesn't interest you, use the back button.

Don't bother with the "I had chicken for dinner" or random picture posts - once, way back in the mists of time, they were amusing. Not any more. You just look like a cock.

Amazing photo IMHO, thanks for sharing.
It's the P&P, get over it. Will always happen.

Oops. I got it wrong, it is actually an air rifle. In the other photos that people have linked to he mentions that the pellet is travelling at 500 fps and that he uses a 1 micro second flash.

Aye, anyone interested will go and have a look, I see hundreds of threads on here of which I have no interest, and don't have any compulsion to comment saying I'm not interested...

Anyway... High speed photography is something I've always been fascinated with, and knowing a bit about how you go about it, I can really appreciate it when someone comes up with results as good as these pictures are. Someone beat me to posting the glass bauble filled with water, which is a fantastic photo, but I really like this one as well..

The amount of planning, preparation and setup time are waaay more than you would think!

Cheers to the OP for bringing these to our attention!! thumbup

What is incredible is that these images were all captured on a run of the mill, high - street Nikon D40.

Why should I get over it? P&P is for non-motoring stuff. Not for ruining threads other people may be interested in. I say again, if you're not interested, post elsewhere rolleyes

Lovely. Classic quote from a classic character from a classic film. (Er, maybe I overdid the classics in that remark.)

I'd have thought it would be slightly more difficult to hit the edge of a razor blade than it is to hit a balloon? Unless it was a really tiny balloon, obviously.

I have a vice a razor blade an air rifle and pellets, tempted to give it a go.. Hitting the blade would be very easy, no camera capable for a re-creation but a yellow pages behind would determine if the pellet does get sliced or the blade mashed. I think a regular razor, blade would get damaged, a stanley knife blade on the other hand I think the pellet would definately loose.

'Rifling' is a process performed to the barrel of a gun. It can be a rifle or a pistol. It was derrived from rifles after smoothbore, but is now found on both as it promotes further range of the projectile, and helps the seal of munition when firing which also improves muzzle velocity and again range. Some also argue that it cleans the barrel.
