I used to have a race version, 190bhp and sequential full throttle gear change...
Managed to get it road registered as well, wish I'd never sold it.

I'll see if I can find a pic...

Great looking car. I have never seen one in the flesh but it would certainly feature on my money no object collection of cars must have list.

Is that bar next to the front plate just to help with parking?

It's a timing strut, for Speed Hillclimbing and Sprinting. You've got to have one to compete in these sports - they are to standard dimensions and they're there to break the light beam that triggers the timing gear at the start and finish of every run.

I had a press one from Renault for a few days when they were new.

Memories included

1) Driving through Soho and having someone shout 'Lego' because they though it was a kit car - that really hurt!
2) My back getting VERY sweaty from the heat of the engine
3) Spinning it simply by turning right too quickly while using no throttle whatsoever!
4) Loving it!

Still to this day think about buying one. I'd replace the engine with a 330bhp VAG turbo item though, that would wake it up a bit

I seem to remember that Renault supplied a rain cover for when it was parked, but nothing for driving in the rain.
That must be home-brewed..?!

I will try and post a picture later, but was a very nice Spider at Spa last week, and an ex racing series version from the UK, probably around the same era as comment below. Very quick on the track!

The race series supported the BTTC that is where Plato made his name he either won 16 from 16 races or 15 from 16 cant quite remember but he was awesome driving them

I thought that was Andy Priaux rather than Plato. Mardi Gras ran the car and Phil Bennett went from the Super Coupe Cup to be his team mate and runner up in the series

If you're feeling a little French this is another interesting possibility - the Venturi Atlantique. Rare as hens' teeth with barely a handful built in right hand drive

Well, Plato and Priaulx competed and won (all 13 rounds in Priaulx case) in the UK spider cup.

as for the roof shown above it is not a Renault OEM one but designed and made by an aftermarket company. The Renault version was a clear plastic cover and was only useable at up to (IIRC) 80kph.

I do without as rain gear takes up a lot less space than the roof does.
The weight is 950kg with standard power at 150bhp. This car was never developed, Renault Built it at Alpine for a year or so and then stopped production. I am sure a power hike would have been on the cards had it not intended it to be a limited production run. The list price at the time was £27k so they have depreciated but now regularly advertised at £19k by dealers-whether they achieve that price is another matter. Most are low mileage though and have to be one of the most attention atracting cars for the money on the road.
How many Lotus Elise's did you see on your way home from work last night?

this is mine:

One on ebay at the moment for OIRO £20k. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

Can't be many other cars around which have deprecitaed so little in over 10 years!

Used to not make more than about £12,500 unless mint...(I turned a couple down at £10,500! Doh!) but now that the euro is so strong, the French are buying them all back from England as they are twice the price there. This added to the problem of how few there are in this Country has pushed the price up recently.
