Police clocked Owen Mildenhall, 41, of Edenbridge, Kent, travelling at 127mph in a Porsche Carrera 911 at Tornagrain near Inverness.

The incident happened at 00:45 on 10 July.

Mildenhall had since lost his job as a motoring journalist, Inverness Sheriff Court heard on Thursday.
Laughable...and nonsense...

How many motoring journalist would still have a job if they've gotten the same treatment.

Answer:
None.

agreed. And I've done similar. In daylight.

No, the idiots defending 120+ on a public road are bell ends.
You've been well and truly brainwashed, haven't you?

I remember the days when I used to pass plod on the M1 at 120mph legally and they smiled at me. And, no, the roads weren't deserted then, it was always necessary to pick an appropriate stretch.

And there are plenty of A, B and yellow roads in my neck of the woods where 120 was possible in cars of that era.

Does that make me, and many others, bell ends?

Ignore him, he's a divvy.

Seriously? Anyone doing that sort of speed without sending someone ahead deserves to be banned. Stupid.
Seriously? Am I the only one who isn't perturbed in the slightest. It's only 127mph, a few squirts on the throttle and it's entirely doable, safe and fun at the right time, in a decent performance car with a competent driver. I've done those speeds at various times during the day for years.

On a well-sighted road in a car that has the power to get up to that speed quickly (and the brakes to lose it quickly), it's not an issue.

Not really. I accept what is right and wrong and when I get caught I take it and don't complain about how unfair the system is. Having held a race licence for a few years in the past I know where to go if I want to enjoy myself properly. A random journo getting nicked and banned won't change my life tbh, he should have been a bit smarter knowing what was at stake with his job etc.

I don't judge people who want to take the risks but I do when they try and defend it.

Most unfortunate to be caught...

I wouldn't expect mobile speed trap (assuming it was mobile and not fixed) at nearly 1am.... Doing that speed in a safe manner in capable car with capable driver isn't really difficult or challenging. You can pull 120mph in a regular run of the mill diesel german barge nowadays without too much difficulty (I am told)...

Perhaps the magistrate should have taken the circumstances into account instead of making an example of journo.

It's this really. We all know the law and the risks of breaking it.

This chap was speeding on a road that is known to be heavily policed. It's not a risk I would take - especially in Scotland with their dangerous driving catch.

As someone who has the T-shirt he can count himself very lucky that he didn't get time for that speed on the A96!

It is a risk, but not particularly difficult to achieve a brief 127mph in a fast car (or modest bike). The punishment is disproportionate to the offence.

Even my fairly battered Mk1 Mondeo could just about manage that at the red-line (close ratio box), allegedly...

I don't care if people are ex racing drivers or not, I don't want people doing that speed on public roads. He's a complete idiot, especially as it's cost him his job.

I am no "Brake" campaigner at the best of times but that speed is just ludicrous on a public road.

But that speed is perfectly acceptable on a public derestricted autobahn..... Some of which can be two lanes with poor road surface...

Seem to be some Brake sympathies there.

Each to their own mate, but easy and safe to do in many areas 24/7.... Do it in the right place and time and you don't affect anyone....plus it's safer than eating a burger from a greasy spoon.

Try it....the cute seal pups will survive and you'll feel alive too!

So simplistic for some?

It's not getting to the speed it's scrubbing it off. From experience I can tell you that when something pulls out at 'normal' speeds and you're doing 150+ it takes quite a lot of braking effort to reign it in. Comparing the Autobahn to the average 'A' road in the UK is a bit odd.
