hehe

Was outside work a couple of minutes ago enjoying the sunshine. I saw one of my colleagues get into her mini cooper, she puts the roof down. I say to myself "I hope she pays attention to that Celica GT right behind her before reversing". I look around, admiring the nice weather, when I hear this big crunch.

Popped over to see her to inspect the damage when she says "the car is supposed to beep to alert me when reversing". I said, to myself, "the driver is supposed to look behind before reversing".

Ouch.

Doesn't suprise me sadly. The over reliance on technology is creating more idiots than ever!

You told the owner of the other car what happened and she's accepted full responsibility i presume?
Of course, the owner of the Celica is a friend.

I've said this before, when I had a car with reversing sensors I got lazy and started to rely on them. I'd just look in the driver's door mirror and wait for the beep. Glad to be without them now.

That car had terrible rear visibility, and that's something which needs addressing in future designs.

Modern cars have got such fat arses and tiny windows that the rear visibility is rubbish. I drove a late 80's Ford Escort the other day and couldn't believe how enormous the rear window seemed.

What used to get me was a lexis IS that my partner used to have. Must remember that stupid beep in reverse is not a parking sensor....

I only trust parking sensors when I'm parallel parking or trying to squeeze out from between two closely parked cars. Found out there's a bit of a blindspot in the 1er's sensors when I was in a works car with a friend, who managed to reverse (at some speed) straight into a bollard.

People just put blind faith in their technology these days. I suspect that those with auto activating lights would drive around in the dark if the things failed....

Same thing happened to SWMBO. Reversed her Z4 straight into a skip. Dumb...!

Not in my case, though I did find that I tend to forget to turn off the lights in other cars I drive, so I've gone back to manual mode.

I didn't get from the OP is whether the Mini actually had a parking sensor that just didn't work or whether she just thought it should have (from a previous car or something)?

Well I do look over my shoulder before starting a manoeuvre but having got the surround option on mine now, I tend to just watch the screen once a cursory glance has confirmed behind is clear.

This from 0:20 onwards, no excuse for ending up in the bad parking thread now, it's handy for lining the car perfectly in the box.

i have both rear and front parking sensors and after having my car 2 months wish i could turn them off.they just annoy me to be honest. understand some people who have issues parking might use them but normal driver should be able to complete most manoeuvres without need a chorus of different beeps.

I jumped in a car the other day to move it and it started beeping as I reversed out of the parking space. I thought it was parking sensors at first but it turned out to be a seatbelt warning, that got faster and faster the longer you left it.

Good job I ignored it and used my mirrors instead biggrin
