I own a 2006 Honda Civic I-Drive. I hate it. I especially hate Honda's fking useless excuse for an automatic gearbox. furious

So, I got to thinking about trading it in. I reckon that I could get roughly 12K part exchange for it as it's fully loaded and has low mileage.

This got me thinking about what I could change it for. I had a look at Auto Trader and I've seen a few VW Phaetons for not much more than my car's worth.

Now, I'm no expert but I believe that the Phaeton is one of those cars that slipped under the radar and didn't sell not because it was a bad vehicle, but because of badge snobbery.

I'm seriously thinking about trading my Honda in for one.

However, before I go any further with this, I'd like to hear your views good and bad. Have I missed something? Is it not as good as I have heard? Is servicing, and/or insurance prohibitively expensive?

Any views from you lot would really help me in making a decision.

Thanks in advance.

So, are they reliable? Have you heard anything negative about them from the VW people?

Whats the spec of your civic?
It's an EX. It's got everything but the parking sensors. (£300 option when I bought it! yikes ), and the multi cd changer.

Why, you got a Phaeton you wanna do a deal on? smile

No - was just trying to find a way of breaking the news to you about your civic. Your PX estimates is, I fear, somewhat optimistic.
I've always been a glass half full type of guy. smile

I also reckoned that with the car market as it is at the moment a dealer would prefer a little Honda to a big, gas guzzling VW.

^^^ Now you mention it. My daughter and me once stood in a VW showroom for nigh on 15 minutes without being approached.

Was looking to buy a new car but walked out.

O.K. so, not a Phaeton, what instead? Comfortable, mile eating, fully loaded, reliable, roughly 15 - 17 K ?

That's the exact car that got me thinking about getting one.

I didn't want to draw you lot's attention to it though. hehe

I like the ones with the 5 spoke alloys especially.. think they look very nice.
I was just going to mention the XJ. What about one of those Chrysler 300 jobs?

I've gotta say Mars that the second one is very interesting. I live in North London so Chiswick is just around the corner.

Thanks. smile

Only one car fits that bill - Audi A8 - take your pick from the diesels both of which are quick and insanely refined and loaded.
I dunno about Audis Nubbin. They're all over the place where I live - i.e. common as muck - and I think their image is shot at the moment.

I'm seriously persuaded by Mars' recommendation though.

Over £90K new, pretty much ever box ticked plus some individual features.

87K miles, FBMWSH

£13500

£600 for DMS sillyness.

Essentially one of the best and fastest cars in the world for buttons.
That is silly money for what you get isn't it?

Going from a Civic to a car like a Phaeton, 7 series, S class etc, the running costs are going to be an absolutely monumental shock. Are you ready for that? If so, go for it biggrin
I'm fortunate in that running costs are not really too much of an issue - within reason. After all, I own a Stratos replica and every time I merely look at it it seems to cost me an arm and a leg. smile

I'm sorely tempted by the 7 series and the S Class, the Phaeton is out afaiac.

I need to think about it.

It sounds like a great buy, but remember this car was £50k+ when new, so if it has come down this much then surely when you want to sell it will be worth a lot less. Also with the price of petrol the way it is, and fuhrer Brown's dodgy tax band thing, it won't be worth 20p by the time you get fed up of the huge running costs.

That said, it is a fine machine, but personally I reckon an Audi A8 with similar specs but perhaps a bit older would be worth looking at. It's practically the same car underneath but has more badge appeal.
Does it though? The folk who drive Audis around my area of N. London seem to think that they own the roads. I feel that the Audi badge has become devalued recently.
