They have their compromises but when you consider the Mk3 provides a very high percentage of the experience of an Elise at a fraction of the cost, they make a lot of sense - imo.
Increase the percentage. Remove the 1ZZ, replace with a 2ZZ, and you'll still have plenty left in your wallet. https://www.carandclassic.com/car/C1643611

I ended up selling my Saab after it developed a few issues that weren't cost effective for me to sort out - the new owner was in a better position from an equipment and skills point of view and promptly sent me photos of everything he'd fixed himself, then the bottom end went... I think he's still quids in though.
This meant I needed another car and after a bit of searching (and being tempted by a couple of 2ZZ cars) I ended up on a 6 hour round trip to pick up a standard facelift in silver with aircon (but no hardtop) and an array of the factory fit TTE accessories (inc. the weird spoiler that's halfway down the car... it's grown on me). Definitely a bit of a project, lots of niggles to sort, the paintwork is terrible, I suspect it's been in an accident at some point but it was cheap enough and has been fun to drive, I can see the appeal now.
I don't think I'd quite considered how small they are compared to modern traffic though
It feels nice to be back in an MR2, the Saab scene was an odd one, the MR2 lot are just like I remember them when I had my MK2 Turbo all those years back and a few of them are still around from then.

It always surprises me how many MR2s you see entered in the Exeter and Torbay Trials.
initially I thought they were an unlikely choice, but they go well.

Not when you appreciate they have the weight exactly where you want it for traction. At the rear over the driven wheels.initially I thought they were an unlikely choice, but they go well.

Couple that with weight transfer and you're golden. It's why you often see the passenger bouncing up and down in open wheel trials machinery.

Bought this recently.......
Did a fast lap of Scotland in it, which was the sole purpose of the purchase. Liked it much more than I expected, and it was a better car than I initially thought, with history, full MOT and loads of sensible maintenance and mods in evidence ( pre cats removed, new calipers, discs and pads, rear subframe etc ), so spent money on it getting it nice ( new roof, 4 new Toyos, 4 wheel alignment, replica supplying dealer plates and rear window decal, various bits and bobs to tidy it up ). Soon for sale after I get the alloys refurbished, got 5 vehicles already and just don't have room really. Really like the car.
Had this for 8 years. 60k miles, 6 speed box. Not for sale.
