Took the car back to the alignment place yesterday and they’ve sorted it out so the wheel is actually straight now. They were pretty apologetic so I’m not gone to be a disco about it.

The rear bumper is booked in for next week, so I need to give the car a clean this week and whip the bumper off (same deal as last time, it’s cheaper if I do some of the donkey work for him).

I’ve also ordered a retrimmed wheel from RSW; the deep cut / scratch on the existing is doing my head in. I’ve gone with ball leather, perforated grips with smooth leather elsewhere with silver grey stitching. The hand brake grip is getting done in perforated leather and the gaiter in alcantara with silver grey stitching (same as my 335i).

It’ll definitely explode now with some nice busy being done to it! laugh

Gave the car a quick wash early doors before it got too hot ready for another road trip to Wales tomorrow.

I also fitted a pair of eBay’s finest Chineseium exhaust tips. The OE ones were done and I’m still toying with a custom backbox with tips to replicate the performance exhaust so didn’t want to spend £90 on BMW ones.

The old ones were pretty shagged.

Hi Sam, did you have much trouble fitting the exhaust tips? I bought a pair for my E92, similar to yours and not OEM BMW. It’s a very tight fit and I can’t seem to get them on. Reviews were all good so I don’t believe the product to be the issue.

I had the same problem with my old E81 but with the OEM BMW tip, ended up having to get BMW to fit it (for free luckily). Not sure if I’m missing the technique on how to get these on! Any tips would be appreciated.

They need a few taps with a mallet but weren’t too bad to get on.

They’re a tight fit (OE and none OE).

I took advantage of the decent weather to get some stuff done to the cars.

First up was cleaning the 330i which was looking a bit st after the weeks of rain and lots of country lane s

Cleaned and given a quick coat of the eBay ceramic spray.

And the reason the rear bumper is off for paint this week….

Bumper off and a very dirty, naked rear end

Gave the unseen bits a good clean with some APC and detailing brushes just because I could. The rear bumper has clearly had a slight knock at some point and it’s this corner where the lacquer peel has started. There’s a very slight lump from some dodgy filler which has cracked.

I’ve ordered a pre-cut piece of PPF for the rear bumper load lip to protect the new paint because given it’s a touring and it’s intended purpose I want to protect the bumper as best I can.

RSW had given me an estimated date of 16th of January for the wheel to arrive.

Should have been but the mud guard fixings are shot to st so gave me a headache (hence the angle grinder being out in one of the pics). I think it’s the end if the line for them because they’re a ball ache whenever I need to remove the arch liners. The rear ones are in the firing line of so much crud. I bodged some new bolts in there this summer and they were done a few months later.

Once they were odd, the rear bumper is easy enough to whip off.

Popped over to the body shop first thing this morning to collect the repainted rear bumper.

The fixings that I removed when I took the bumper off last week were pretty grotty.

So I made a quick pit stop at Sydney on the way home to grab some new fasteners.

Bumper refitted

Annoyingly after getting it back on, I noticed that the two middle parking sensors hadn’t seated properly and they rest pretty much on the crash bar so I had to undo one side to give myself enough access to get at them. When I refitted the passenger side I caught a corner on the rear light and chipped the fresh paint which annoyed me. It’s tiny and been touched up but that’s not the point.

I’ve not bothered refitting the mudguards because the fixings are all shagged and they just give more more hassle than they’re worth especially if I’m going to remove the liners after each winter to clean behind them.

I’ve had an email from FedEx to say that they’re due to collect a parcel from RSW, so hopefully the new wheel should be back sooner than I thought.

I’ve still got lot loads of bits planned for this:

  • new rocker cover gasket
  • new CCV system
  • recolour front seats and armrests
  • M3 front arms
  • new rear arms and bushes
  • posh alignment
  • repair rust hole in drivers side rear arch
  • have rust bubbles on passenger rear arch seen too
  • remove side skirts to clean / check for rust / paint jacking points
  • paint brake callipers
  • paint / treat surface rust underneath (braces, diff etc)
  • replace MULF and have a replacement coded to the car
So, it’s going to be a busy few months coming up. I’m looking forward to the longer days to be able to get odds and sods sorted out after work.

Ha, it wasn’t too bad today. Only having use of one car was getting boring pretty quickly after a few days so that adds some motivation.

Haha not this time pal; promised I'd keep this until the mortgage is gone in 2025 and I'll stand by that; so far it's been a great car and I really like it; more so now I've 'made it my own'...

A box service, box remap and engine remap should have it singing sweetly... Then onto the bodywork

Well you certainly know how to make me feel guilty. laugh

My plan for my Cat N 330i is to fix anything broken if I have to!

Looks great Sam. You've reminded me that I need to get the Mrs X1's front bumper off to replace a single failed parking sensor - high labour for a small part!

Where abouts are you out of interest? I'm looking at a front bumper refresh and need to find a body shop that's good in Hampshire.

I’m just trying to keep the old girl as nice a possible and I quite enjoy mucking about with it.

The front bumpers aren’t usually too hard to get get off, although it it’s daft that there’s not an easy way to get the sensors.

I’m in the midlands, so a bit to a trek for you!

This car is looking better with every update, it's not far off showroom fresh now! I wish I could get mine into the paint shop but it's been on my to-do list pretty much since I got it and I'm no closer to getting the time to do it.

I'm not familiar with the X1 so I can't say for sure, but I'd guess it's quite likely you can access the sensors through the wheel arch by removing the front part of the liner, much easier than taking the bumper off.
