997 C4S Checklist

Check the service history Tallys up, check tyre depths, find out when disks and pads last changed as they aren't cheap, same for clutch.
Check left exhaust for excess smoke.
Most importantly get a garage to check to out properly, unless u have experience and know what to look for then a pro could save you big bucks

Get the DME checked for over revs.
But as Alex said, get it checked properly, these cars have two main issues affecting the engine that could cost you many thousands of pounds to put right.
IMS bearing letting go and scoring of the bores.
There is no check AFAIK for the IMS condition other than a strip down but a boroscope ( SP ? ) of the bores can be done.
A sootier drivers side exh I understand is a tell tale sign of the bores needing attention.
A Gen 1 997 would have to be pretty cheap for me to consider one privately when there are some good indies offering cast iron warranties on these cars that they have inspected from bumper to bumper.

thanks for the input... Found one nice Seal Grey 997 C4S 06 06 with 34k on the clock - PSE, Nav, Rear park, Rear wiper, short shift. FPSH, 6 owners. Porsche warranty left for 8 months - Beautiful and looked after exterior - Few marks and scuffs on the interior, new clutch, brakes - 8k miles & 14 months ago. What's realist price to pay for it privately please?

Sounds nice, I got a black 06/06 997 c4s 37k in Jan (Nav, rear park, bose, rear wiper, no pse though) from OPC with 2yrs 9months wtee @ 33k in Jan, which you might find a helpful figure to work back from. Had resprayed front and back bumpers and new disks and pads all round. Definitely get a boroscopy on the engine before the warantee's up though if you're not renewing it. Mines currently in for a rebuild.

Thanks Richard- sounds like a great car. What was the car originally advertised at please - will help see what discount I could potentially expect?
Yes, I love it to bits. Engine issues have taken the shine off it a bit, but am missing it greatly right now! Can't fault OPC in the way they have dealt with it but still a bugger none the less. Car was initially up @ 35k with the 2 yr warrantee. Got it down to 33 and was allowed to keep the previous owners remainder of 9 month warrantee in addition to the 2 years that came with it. Deal was done just before Christmas, so could have been a bit of a slow time for OPC.
At a guess, with 2 years less warrantee, 6 months depreciations and as a private sale 28-29 would sound about reasonable. I'd definitely feel a bit safer with an inspection if going private though.
