I've posted on your RR thread Sam, but the drain of interest is underneath the DME. There is a grommet that can get bunged up but that's not the drain - the drain almost looks like a gap in a seam between body parts.

Ah yes, that was it. How bloody annoying. The chap in the video talks about the leaf grids, and I tend to clean them regularly, and blast the drains out with water. I’ll still keep an eye on the bottom of the box, at least check for signs it’s been wet in there at all.

Brill, cheers for that. I’ll watch the video and have a dig about.

And whilst I thought it was running ok, it’s definitely not. Just as I was reversing not the drive it sounded like st; the engine management light blinked on and off before staying on permanently. This time it also threw up a load of engine error codes:

0029D0 - misfire on cylinder 4
0029D1 - misfire on cylinder 5
0029D2 - misfire on cylinder 6
0029CC - misfiring, several cylinders
002E1B - ignition cylinder 4
002E1C - ignition cylinder 5
002E1D - ignition cylinder 6

So, for whatever reason, it doesn’t appear to be running on bank two. I’ve got very little idea what to do other than try and find a garage who can look at it. I don’t really want to attempt the parts cannon approach.

Could it be a vac leak/air getting in somehow after the MAF?

Dry, perished intake mani gaskets could cause stuff like this on the M54s etc - could be it be the same with your N54?

The N54 is my 335i is running well….it’s the supposedly more reliable N52 giving me st!

Internet wisdom is that it’s the coils / plugs, but both were replaced by the previous owner.

Sorry pal; N52...

Yeah coils/plugs could be a good shout too... Maybe swap them about first and see if the issues follow to bank 1

Bloody cars!

I'd get the DME dried out first. I had all these issues and replaced all plugs, and coils. It ran great for a bit and then the problems returned, before reaching hte critical point of the DME's eventual demise. But my DME was properly drowning apparently. It's only when I looked back after that I realise I'd probably been having on/off issues for years as a result of it, such as perceived gearbox hesitation, or cutting power out under load etc. Few and far between but when those issues popped up they were usually in fairly hairy situations.

I've not had any issues at all since replacing the DME. Hopefully you've caught yours early enough.

If the DME took a bath, I’d be sorry to say it’s probably that. I wouldn’t usually say it’s a coincidence that three coil packs or three plugs would die at the same time. Whip the DME out and dry it properly. I’d put it in a bowl of rice (special fried DME?) and stick it in the airing cupboard.

Cheers, I’ll get on that tomorrow as I’m really not in the mood to do it in the dark.

I’ve had a stty few days; wisdom tooth removed last Wednesday which was horrible, stomach bug this weekend and now the DME trying swimming.

If it's any consolation I reckon mine had occasional problems for about 7 years, on/off, before the DME was truly toasted. So hopefully you'll get lucky.

Understandable. Hope you’re on the mend soon. I’d recommend a massive bowl of pasta (or a curry) and an early night. Maybe not on a tender tum, mind.

Fingers crossed.

Used DME’s aren’t cheap and then the coding / cloning etc.

Think it cost me about £500 all in. I can't recall where the garage sent them off to for coding though

It'd be surprising if there were multiple coil/plug issues all in one go I'd have thought.

Sorry about the DME issues...I hate electrical issues on cars. Massive ball ache. irked

I thought that would be odd too especially given they’re not all that old.

I’ll be removing the DME this lunchtime and putting it somewhere dry. It looks like I’ll need to split the casing to get at the actual board and potentially clean up an corrosion with a soft toothbrush and ipa.

I removed the DME today and it doesn’t look great. It looks like water has been getting in for a while on and off.

I’ve had a crack at cleaning it up with IPA for now and will stick it somewhere dry for a few days. I’m going to reach out to a few companies re a replacement.
