After three and a half years without a bike it’s finally time to get a new one!

I’ve had a Yamaha XJ6 and a GSXR 600 in the past. Both too small for me.

Now getting a 2012 (but registered in 2013) BMW R1200GS Adventure in black.

Completely over the top for what I’m using it for, but large and comfy is what I want.

Will be fun to see how I get on without riding for a while!

Photos once I’ve collected it and got home!

Home! First impressions are good.

It’s huge. I love the size. But surprisingly easy to ride. It’s a very comfy riding position. No aches or pains anywhere. Surprised as I’ve not ridden for three and a half years.

Got my confidence back quickly. Doesn’t make me want to ride at silly speeds like my GSXR did. Quite happy plodding along at 60.

What don’t I like? Where the indicators are placed. Makes sense for left for left and right for right but the cancel button is annoying.

Oh and getting on and off is comical to watch!

Can’t get a photo to upload annoyingly.

You are stepping on the n/s footpeg first and climbing on like you’d do with a horse and not trying to lift your leg over the seat?

I made that mistake first time too. Luckily it was at a bmw dealer so they’re probably used to seeing that.
I’ll give that ago! Although last time I went on a horse 20 odd years ago I fell off…

Four hours and a 100 miles today. Bike is good! Comfy, although a little twinge in my back towards the end, but that’s likely due to not riding for so long.

Got around 50MPG from the onboard computer. Happy with that.

Not a huge fan of how small the speedo is. Hard to see the numbers.

But other than that I love it.

First problem with the bike…headlight bulb went. They do make it easy to change for someone who doesn’t have children’s hands! Maybe I need to have kids for that reason…

Also fked up with my new plate…where I need to drill the holes is right in the middle of the new 4D plates. That’s annoying!

Loving it though. So easy to ride.

Well today was possibly the worst weather I’ve ever ridden in. Nine miles from work can be done in just under 12 minutes normally…

30 minutes today! But amazingly my kit held up great considering it’s nearly nine years old. Slightly damp foot as boots aren’t waterproof (getting some new ones next week if they fit!).

Might need a new helmet…the riding position means some water drips down my neck! Ok not the end of the world but gives me a reason to buy a new one!

Bike felt good though. No issues with the standing water, cross winds etc.

Heated grips work well and are actually too hot on the highest level!

Yeah sod doing it after every ride!

We’ve got a self use car wash up the road. Just used it. Didn’t use the brush and god knows how many stones are in it! But jet wash (at a distance) and a snow foam it turned out alright.

Got most of the of the st off.

I can’t find the mileage trip. I like to keep track of how many miles I do a month without having to make a note.

ACF50 applied last week. Fairly easy to do.

Had a two people comment on the bike when I’ve been out as well. Some bloke in his 80s loved it. His smile as he revved it was great!

I’m amazed at how big the panniers are! I’ve managed to get a weeks food shop in two of them.

Enjoying it so far! Nice refund from Hastings when I told them of my private plate as well! Wasn’t expecting it at all!

First time in a while that I’ve been able to go out on it just for fun.

Enjoyed it. Just does it easily. It doesn’t make me want to ride as fast as possible which my GSXR did. Surprised I didn’t lose my licence!

fk me it gets dirty easily though! It was cleaned last week and wasn’t too bad, but after today it had dirt dripping down the screen!

Also can get almost all my work stuff in it which is nice.

A front fender extender and mudsling are supposed to help a lot. You can even go to the extent of frame infill panels if you’re legs are getting wet. A hugger seems to divide opinion but if you get a cheapie don’t use the bolts that come with it.

I only had my 1200 for 6 weeks before I wrote it off but I’ve got a new 1250 ordered for March. I’m really looking forward to picking it up.

They don’t suit everyone but I loved mine.
It’s got a mudsling and I think a fender extender. I’ll check when I’m next on it.

I’ve got used to the indicators now as well. Actually like them how they are.

How much would you say is the going rate for a 42,000 mile service?

One place said it will be £500ish for the service and if the valves need adjusting it will be four hours labour at £70 an hour on top.

Thanks all. Thought it was a bit steep!

It isn’t BMW but a local place that has a good reputation.

Found somewhere else that has been recommended as well smile.

Some has cut the wire to the spot lights. Noticed last week that they weren't working. Finally got round to checking today and saw that the wire is cut on both sides. If it was just one side I could put it down wear and tear, but both? fkers.

It will have been done at work. Work for the police and we’ve had issues before. Normally nails in tyres or nuts loosened!

Will never be able to prove it though. Thankfully I’m moving stations soon to somewhere with secure parking.

Any recommendations on tyres? In the past I’ve always gone for Michelin Pilot Sport on my XJ6 or GSXR600. It will only be used for road use. Not even slightly off road. Will be used for a 60 mile commute daily. Something that gives me confidence in the wet. The Pilot Sports were great in the wet.

Thanks both. Got a fair bit of life left in the current ones so some time to have a look at what I want.

Just put £50 of fuel in. That hurt! Properly not the best time to move stations and have a 60 mile round trip compared to 18!

Service kit turn up. Got it from Nippy Normans. £120 with oil.

Got home a little earlier than planned so started it today. Oil has been drained. That was actually very easy. Was going to replace the air filter but once I got a load of fairings off it there was a sticker that said 'lifetime air filter' and removing it would void the warranty. Bike is no longer in warranty so doesn't matter but is it worth replacing? It looked like a bh to get to!

Just need to get a new oil filter remover as can't find it. Properly should have checked before I started doing it! Whoops.

Will get the spark plug remover tool after pay day (its been an expensive month with vet bills!).

Figured as I'm going to run it into the ground a garage doing the service doesn't seem worth the cost when its actually fairly easy.
