Lotus Elise S2 Sports Racer | PH Private Area

All Series 2 Elises are great, but some are just a little more special than others...

There’s been plenty of S1 Lotus Elise content on PH of late, from our PH25 winner to the Analogue Automotive reimagination and some glorious auction cars as well. All more than deserved, of course, because nothing encapsulates the genius of Lotus (and all the things we love on PH) quite like the first Elise. But it’s not just the original that was pretty good…

‘After the S1 has received so much justified attention in the last few months’ read the email to PH, ‘perhaps it's time to have another look at the S2’; we couldn’t agree more, very good pitch, Paul. So here’s his S2 that’s for sale; quite a special one, too, as a Sports Racer, which was rather more than just the muscle car stripes.

Limited editions are as much a part of the Elise story as round tail lights and extruded aluminium. The Sports Racer was already off to a good start with the zingy Toyota 1.8 VVTi-L engine, all 190hp and 8,200rpm of it. To that base Lotus added better Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs, plus pretty much all of the 111R optional extras at the time: the newly launched Lotus Traction Control was standard, as were the Sport and Touring Packs, plus the hardtop and the lovely lightweight forged wheels.

These saved 1.2kg per corner and were shod in Yokohama Advan tyres rather than the standard Bridgestones. Bring all that together with a redesign of the pedal box for easier heel and toe as well as new seats and it’s clear the Sports Racer was more than the usual badge and paint job special.

It was rare, too, with just 100 UK cars offered in red or blue and many fewer than that believed to be remaining. This 2006 car is still yet to reach 50,000 miles and has a stack of history (18 services for 18 years!) to back that up. It also benefits from a recent suspension refresh with specialist Steve Guglielmi, said to improve ‘the sublime handling of this car even further’. The condition isn’t perfect, but it is very good. There’s no reason not to carry on driving and enjoying this lovely little Lotus, basically.

It’s being sold to help get the next generation with driving lessons and a first car; great though an Elise is, it’s probably not ideal for a 17-year-old! Still, Paul’s loss is going to be another’s gain. It’s hard to imagine the best S2 Elises ever being anything less than highly prized sports cars, with this one currently a smidge over £20k. And if anyone has an S3 Elise that’s being sold, just to complete the trio, you know where we are…

Was just discussing this very car with a mate last night. Very tempted to park it alongside my Caterham Seven. Need a bigger garage though…

Elise prices seem to be all over the place at the moment, hard to know where the market actually is. This one seems to have sold now.

What is the reason for Lotus to mix Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs? Don't the dampers come with matching springs?

While separate companies, Bilstein and Eibach work closely in a sort of you scratch my back, I'll scratch your back way.

Bilstein makes dampers, Eibach makes springs.

If you buy a Bilstein after market kit, they will come with Eibach springs.

A bit like Koni kits, which come with HR springs.

Cheaper and more beneficial than having to have an in house factory to produce either dampers or springs and then compete with an already established player.

So, they will be the correct and matched springs on this Elise.

I’m desperate to get into a lotus as soon as possible, a box to be ticket for certain just to experience the ‘add lightness’ approach to sports cars, instead of heavy and POWER!

Good info, many thanks.

I had one virtually identical to that. That's a pretty good price given I paid £18k just as COVID hit.

Great fun although paint quality wasn't the best and the hardtop fastening points needed repair.

Sold on as I wanted something with a bit more ooomph. It got a lot of positive attention and also a lot of people trying to race me.

The worst looking series of Elise. The insectoid front end has dated and the S3, in itself an old design, looks much more fresh. I bought an S3 Final Edition recently. Had loads of S1 and 2 x S2 when they were new. Not had an Elise for a few years.
I’d forgotten how small they are inside. The useful shelf and cargo net behind the seats has disappeared although a bottle holder has appeared between the seats.
It’s notably better built than any previous Elise I’ve owned. It’s a great car 10% of the time. By which I mean, you wouldn’t want to daily one. But on the right road, on the right day at the right time, they are totally engaging and total fun.
The definition of a great second or third car.
I may write a Car Pool. PH should start those again.

Not surprised if it is sold, it looked a very sensible price. I’ve got a supercharged 2ZZ Elise now after having the NA (111R). Whilst the uplift in power is welcome, the smoother power curve has meant I do kind of miss how rewarding hitting the cam change was in the 111R.

The blue and white S2 Sports Racers are my favorite Elise. I had No. 57 or 59, my memory fails me. Pretty close to the perfect sports car imho. I supercharged mine to 280bhp which also added in a lovely bit of midrange torque. Would have been a lifetime keeper had the final editions not come along.
Congrats to whoever bought this one, enjoy!

Nice.
Proper history, too.
And it’s a fair price.
How unusual.

Thanks for the nice write up Matt and yes it sold pretty much immediately to a lovely pistonhead-er who looks set to enjoy it further. Missing it already cry

Really fancy an S2 elise/exige. Love my 981 Cayman but the pull of an elise just keeps getting me.
