Help and guidance please.

My Dad has an issue with his car. Starting from cold it will run for a short distance and then the glow plug light will go on and it will go into limp mode. If you pull over and turn it off wait a short while then set off again its OK but then can do it again. Seems to clear when warm.

Not sure what he dignostic fault is showing as I cant get that info from him but he has had several people diagnose it as requiring either new injectors or a new turbo. Took it to our local Ford Indy who said the actuator looked to be not operating properly and had a bit of a fiddle with it which improved matters temporarily but is now playing up again.

The car is only worth about £2k so major expense on a turbo is a bit of a stretch and at 80 yrs old its thrown him into a bit of a panic. I am aware that this seems to be a common problem so just wondered how others have gone on.

welcome to my world

its PROBABLY (hard to say without a diagnostic) the sticky turbo vanes

simple test

remove the e clip (dont lose it) from this arme

the arm to the left operates the variable vane unit

it should be REALLY loose and floppy

option 1 - strip and clean it out

option 2 - fit a new unit, or a recon, or a 2nd hand unit

if you have a laptop a Formidable diagnostic tool (£20 off ebay) will reveal all

try watching the arm as the engine is started without any revs, you can do it yourself by standing with the door and bonnet open and looking at the actuator

on start up the black plastic arm should go bolt upright

if it drops back 1/2" you will get a red coil light

The DTC (error) code that you might get is P132BFINED, it doesnt actually say what the fault is on cheaper readers but on a £1500 pro unit it does say "turbocharger/supercharger"

I got my Dad to dig the paperwork out and it is a P132B cofe that was showing when he got it diagnosed but clearly the Garage has opted for the safe but expensive option of "replace it with new"

The arm does go vertical when the car starts an stays there. I will remove th cip when he is next here and see how freely it moves but I am pretty convinced its either sticky vanes due to coking ( the car does lots of short running ) or an electrical ault with the actuator unit as loose wiring seems to be quite common.

The only thing that is bugging me is that most people seem to experienece the problem when the car is warm however he gets it not long after setting out while the car is cold. He then pulls over, restarts and it usually clears and runs happily once warm.

Thanks for your help again.

ive got sick of the limp mode, took the arm off and left it at about 1/3rd travel (moving to the rear)

no limp mode and most of its 130bhp available till i can sort it

P132BFINED is what i get on the Formidable Super F

I get at start up, 3 miles down the road, a stop/start clears it but then it comes on when a load comes on the car

Just an update on this now we have the confidence to uncross our fingers!

Contemplated a recon turbo from an online retailer and then get our local Ford indy to fit. This would have worked out way under half what the cost of a new one would be which was £1100 +

Our local Ford Indy suggested that we get the turbo on the car cleaned up and check tested and arrange with a Garrett dealer as an alternative. That suited me as we then knew what was going back on and the garage had sole responsibility for the repair rather than just fit a part that they hadn't sourced.

So we went that route. The car was off the road for 3 to 4 days but it has come back and after two weeks I can say it's cured. Significant benefit in performance too according to my Dad.

Total cost a shade under £500. Told him to only use decent fuel in the future and to give it a decent run on a regular basis.

Thanks upatdawn for your responses.
