Before yesterday I thought anyone could run the London marathon by signing their name and paying the fee. Is the London sign up typical of all marathons - what about Manchester?
No, Manchester you can just pay an entry fee and get in. London is hugely oversubscribed - 30,000 places for 500,000 applicants - hence the ballot.
Manchester entries close at midnight tomorrow (Tuesday 23rd), they've already had over 12,000 entries. It's same day as London next year, but if you enter London and get in they'll refund you the entry fee.

Good luck with the sub-20. Once you’ve managed it, there will be no going back…
Well, the Takumi Sens didn't turn up in time but I managed to do 19:56 in my Novablasts - very tough last km but pleased with myself!

New shoes arrived yesterday and they're very nice - can't believe the uppers compared to shoes I've had in the past! I'm doing a fast 5km on the treadmill as part of a sprint triathlon in the gym on 29 June so that's the next focus, going to do another Runna plan until then and see if a sub-19 is doable for me but will also need to factor in some cycling and swimming training so we'll see...

Thanks for the encouragement and well done to all who did the London marathon!

There's also Brighton which is about the same size as Manchester and well supported.

You might also want to consider Rotterdam (the week before London this year, very flat course) or Amsterdam (spring) as easy ones to get to, along with Berlin where you can increase your odds of getting in by entering as a group, if one of you gets in you all get in.

Our little running club got 6 championship start times and another 9 GFA (including me) so 15 guaranteed for next year just from this race which is amazing.

We had 32 runners with times ranging from 2:37 to 6:14 although we did have 6 women under 3:15 which has never happened before.4 men under 3 hours which is about average.
That's really good. We had 2 championship spots and 5 GFA this year.

Views on these Asics please:

They feel well made but I know little about running shoes. Are they considered to be running shoes and will they be suitable for the transition to outside running after 10 months on a treadmill?

Well done dirtbiker! Apparently the TS9 have an even lighter upper than the TS8. I’m not sure I’ll manage another sub 19, but would settle for ducking under 19:30 right now.

ASICS shoes are a decent brand I’ve been using them for nearly 30 years as they just fit my foot shape perfectly.

Keep an eye on the distance you have run in running shoes, most people would say a pair of trainers should be replaced around the 400 mile mark but depends how heavy you are etc. so depends if you will cover more than that in the 10 months inside.

Not had experience of that model but have a look on the ASICS outlet website for better prices

Made the switch to early morning running as of this morning.
The insects (out where I live) were hellish last night, it made for a quick 5k time though but Thoroughly miserable spitting the little bds out of my mouth what seemed like every 30secs.

Going to get gait analysis done on Friday. Looking at the wear on my runners I look very neutral but it won’t hurt to get it done as I’m due new shoes anyway

Oh dear there is no love for these Asics! No one's even heard of them redface so they are going back. I will double the budget I think.

I got some Gel Nimbus 25s from the outlet recently, I really like them, very comfy and loads of cushioning.

Running shoes is a personal preference and I was for years only Mizuno wave rider , but after a while I tried a Mizuno Wave Sayonara which was a racing shoe and was good. More recently I use wave rider for every day running, but NIke Vapor or alphafly for racing

Over 840,000 have entered the 2025 London Marathon ballot eek

That's up from the record 578,000 set last year.

About a 2.8% chance of getting in.

So gait analysis done of Friday confirmed that I’m a neutral runner.

Bought myself some New Balance on Saturday.
So much more room than my old Nike.

They are lovely to run in. I’ve just ordered a second pair as I like them so much.

There are always a few from our club that manage to get in, mixture of charity, GFA and ballot places. Might not be so many next year by the sounds of it!

I have applied for London. I think I’m glad i have no chance of getting in… haha

Over two weeks not running now with shin pain. I have been doing exercises/ foam rolling. Going the physio Wednesday. Hopefully I can get back running soon!

There are ways in if you really want to do it. Mate of mine got a last minute charity return place last year, organised a quiz night which raised a few hundred quid and job done.
