A lot of money no doubt, but that was the basis for the thread really, using the Longines as an example and with a budget of £2k what would people go for?
Ah. Should perhaps have read that a little more closely... getmecoat

The ultimate value for money watch HAS to be.......
Use a different analogy.

Why buy a BMW when a Kia will still transport you?

Not a great analogy. Does anyone say a BMW is value for money?

I wonder if that Longines is most affordable Swiss annual calendar available? There can't be much out there to touch it for that

Nomos? Manufacture movements for bargain prices!

I'd say negotiation also comes into this argument. If you believe a watch with an RRP of £3K new is actually worth that and you just pay up, fair enough. But I think very few people actually do (one or two brands / models excepted). Therefore I would argue that, if yuo had a budget for a 'value' watch of £2K, you could snag something in the RRP bracket of £2.5 - £3K, which brings even more choice.

They're less bargainous than they used to be. The one I want - the blue-faced Zürich - is a few quid shy of three grand.

Now, a Seiko 5 - there's a manufacture movement, for beer money.

It's hard to justify more than a few quid for a watch in terms of 'VFM' surely?

A £100 phone will do everything even the £100K+ watches can do except look good.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't buy one, but VFM and £2.5K seem mutually exclusive to me in terms of quality (I've watches decades old that didn't cost the equivalent of a tenth of that still accurately tell the time) or functionality (Phases of the moon? Day/Date? a £2.99 diary will do that!).

I was happy to pay about £100 for a dive watch, but my computer only cost £200 and does a huge amount more.

VFM? The computer killed the watch and, though they look very cool, the £1000+ dive watches don't do anything the computer doesn't!

Really difficult to say!! Value for money could mean the amount of watch you're getting for your money but then that watch could be worth bugger all once bought or a watch that may be more expensive but holds its value no matter how long you keep it.

I saw both of these in the metal recently, pictures do not do them justice.

I saw every watch* in every shop window in the main drag in Zurich. These two Tudors, along with the heritage chrono and the various incarnations of the 50 Fathoms, were the nicest sports watched I saw.

Hamilton, with modified ETA movements with a 60 hour reserve are a bargain in my eye too.

  • Except the Nautilus and all the Harry Winston's, they were taken out.

I can kinda see where the OP is coming from, but equally I think my interpretation of VFM would be along the lines of the Seiko SKX007 or the Longines Hydroconquest - in terms of the feeling that you're genuinely getting a LOT of watch for your money.

By the way, what are Tudor residuals like?

I can't add a photo on my mobile but there is a picture of the Seiko Marinemaster 300 on the "show me your Seikos" thread. You should be able to get a new one for under two grand.

It has a hand made Grand Seiko movement. I don't think it can be beaten for "bang for the buck", if I was ever in the happy position of being able to spend a four figure sum on a watch that would be the one.

Agreed.

Boom!

Really like that. Have had my eyes on an Oris Aquis for some time, as I consider it top value and lovely looking. But I do like that....

The Seiko beard's will tell you the MM300 doesn't have a Grand Seiko movement. It's close, and is undoubtedly high-end, but it's not the daddy.
