What a sight those F-4's made. Oh for days like those again. I would have probably stayed in the FAA if we had kit like that.

It must have been fun getting those beasts back down onto HMS Ark Royal and Eagle. They weren't the biggest ships in the world - even if they were "traditional" carriers.

They weren't used on Eagle, only the Ark Royal was modified to take them. The Eagle had Sea Vixens and Buccaneers right up till her decomissioning.

What did you serve on Shar2? My old man was on Hermes in the late 60s, early 70s.

Back in the days when we had a proper Fleet Air Arm.......
I know it has been said many times before, and has been the source of much vexation - but imagine what these cheeky rascals would have done over the Falklands. (I know that there draw-back has been cited as being seen as a 'come on' to the Junta)

Been a long time since a photo, of any kind, made me go misty eyed. That one managed it in 2 seconds flat.

Thanks for posting that mate. Bloody awesome.

This is the story of an old ship, and the young men who sail in her

The Argentinians almost got their timing perfect in 1982, Ark Royal out of commission and scrapped in 1980, HMS Hermes was going to be decommissioned in 1982 and most likely sold off to India (who got her later anyway in 89) and the MOD had announced HMS Invincible was to be sold to Australia.

Alternatively it can be said they got their timing very wrong.

But imagine what might have happened without them if Argentina had waited till 1983.

Or, indeed, until 2009 for round 2.

I hope I may have vindicated myself for having been a voyeur on this thread for too long.
The shot of the Phantom and discussion of HMS Eagle, The Sea Vixen being one of my best planes I found this (Through Googlerolleyes)

The condition of the pic makes it even more "Cool" tbh.

They would get murdered today, aside from the fact that the islands are far more heavily defended we can get soldiers there by air as quickly as they can deliver them to certain death by boat.

The 4 Tornadoes on the island are far more capable than any aircraft the Argentine air force possesses and can rapidly be reinforced if necessary. The airbase is protected by Rapier and long range radar if they have any Pear Harbour ambitions.

In the unlikely even they ever took the islands to UK's cruise missiles could evaporate their navy and air force in their bases and the Harrier GR9 directed by AEW helicopters is probably more effective than the Sea Harrier was in 1981 oh and the Type 45 destroyer could shoot down the entire Argentine air force simultaneously smile

I have a number of books on the Sea Vixen and I have NEVER seen that picture. I'd forgotten that it was "quite fast".

I have a friend who used to fly our F-4s off the Ark Royal at the end of his RN flying career. He has some great stories to tell, including deciding it was time to retire when he had to eject immediatly after lauching off the catapults as the engines failed. Apparently bobbing around the sea watching the Ark Royal steaming straight towards you at full speed hoping it will swerve in time isn't very pleasant...

That wasn't the first tie that he got from Martin Baker either!

I served with 800Sqn on HMS Invincible and Illustrious, an 80's rating.
