No, it's just that the RAF pilots have more skill so they can fly closer to the ground, the yanks are rubbish so they go really high to avoid stuff.American planes are mostly very very high up

Just different solutions to different problems. High & Fast vs Low and Fast. Tornados were developed as [i]fast[/u] low-level bombers for a cold war era war against a heavily armed USSR.
The English Electric Lightning didnt have any problem catching, say... a U2
Had to put this up! BA VC10 at White Waltham airshow in 1977. The skipper ended-up in the shit big-time, allegedly... High angle-of-attack and flap setting indicates they were going pretty slowly. They'd have been deeply mired in ka-ka had they got behind the drag-curve doing this. Cool though!
