He makes out stuff is to do with the mind but most of it has a decent trick behidn it

that said he is a brilliant live entertainer and his live show was great. its fun trying to work out how its all done.
Yep, all the NLP stuff is nonsense. His tricks usually have old fashioned magic tricks behind them.

some of them are old fashion magic

but the NLP stuff is not nonsense... make no mistake, its a very powerful tool
just with a small knowledge you can very easily work out peoples thought patterns and how theyare thinking and arriving at teh things they are saying
Derren Brown certainly woln't be use anything like that, he is a magician. He needs to completely control the situation. That means he needs to know 100% the answer. When he gets it wrong, it's because he got it wrong on purpose. I'd say 90+% of his show is pure showmanship.

I wonder how much of his audience would still go if they knew that the mind reading / psychology stuff was a bluff ? They do know it's magic trick don't they ?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or something similar.

Basically, some people believe that they can make you do certain things, or think certain things by using body signals and reading body signals. They think that Derren Brown can read these subliminal signals.

It's a new age scam used by con-artists who want to teach you the tricks to read people. Wether you want to become a world class salesman or a magician.. whatever...

I'm highly sceptical.

hmmm...

you seem to have a bit of an axe to grind here

not only is that a grossly inaccurate definition but NLP is used very successfully in training, teaching and counselling. Its not new-age and has very little relevance in conjuring or 'sales' as you put it.

Are you trying to tell me that there aren't people selling courses in NLP to improve your sales techniques or a raft of other courses to part gullible people with their money ?

I think we both know that's wrong. I have no axe to grind, I just get annoyed when I see silly people being taken in by con-merchants. I think NLP has it's fair share of con-merchants.

So has buying a sandwich from a garage... you open it up and all the filling is centred around the position which you could see it from the outside of the packaging. Towards the back of the bread there is sod all filling.

everything has con merchants.... car tuning, cheap DIY tools, pensions & mortgages, religion, christmas trees, high street clothes .. balh blah

welcome to the world

Extreme intelligence if you ask me and the power of suggestion/subconscience. I don't know how he does it, but he's obviously got an extremely high iq. I went to the same secondary school as him and he was always talked of in high regard

tricks...

just been watching it again

nail writer/envelope thing is called the swami gimmick by the way
thats how he picks out the girl at the end

as for the Oracle... I think a batch of cards are taken off stage during the interval to be memorised. Its a memory trick. The interval for these shows was apparently very very long and only one person was allowed at a time to go onto the stage and drop in their secret envelope.

I've watched his shows on television for years and seen him live. He is an amazing performer but it is just a magic trick IMHO. Some of it I have absolutely no idea how it is done but that is why magic is so fascinating.

Yep, the envelopes are never opened on stage and verified, so their is no justification for having anything written down. The only reason is so that either Derren, or Derrens people can read the contents and relay the info.

He does a similar mind-reading trick in something wicked tour. People have to write down who they had their first crush on. They write it on a pad and tear off the page and put it in their back pocket. It's never used again, and as if by magic Derren knows what was written down smile

Has anyone ever contemplated the idea that the participants are under contract with DB?

wink

The oldest trick in the book, and been used for centuries.

He is very good at what he appears to do though smile
