So, what is the solution to the boats problem?

Everyone's a critic but no solutions.

Possibly there is no solution.
We can't stop them coming and we can't really send them back.

Is it a big issue?
Yes, because the media makes it a big issue and joe public is not intelligent enough to see past the media rubbish.
The solution is to make an agreement with France to host a properly funded Aslyum Processing Center on French soil that provides a safe route to claiming Asylum in the UK.

Process applications while the Asylum Seekers are in France, and do so fairly and in accordance to our commitments in international treaties. Those with genuine claims will want to go through the official route and not risk their lives on rubber dinghys.

The people smugglers then left with those who want to enter the UK illegally without intention to claim asylum. These can be turned back to France, or arrested if they reach British waters/soil and returned the Asylum Processing center in France.
It won't make the problem go away of hundreds/thousands of them showing up with no means of identification and therefore little or no way of determining whether they are genuine asylum seekers or not,

A lack of resources is usually blamed for the delays in processing but when you are faced with an army of people without any documentation how on earth are you supposed to figure out who they are and where they have come from?

So all it will do is see them detained in France for an indeterminate length of time. Faced with that option many of them (especially those without a legit case) are still going to head for the boats and hope they can bypass the UK authorities anyway.

(Which is of course the point of the Rwanda option/deterrent, its supposed to look like a st thing to have to do and therefore deter them from coming. Whether that works or not is a different discussion)

If they reach UK soil they can claim asylum.
Just like now.
This fixes nothing.

Does anyone else find this totally bizarre?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13340837/...

Britain is on a war footing?

Why? We have no direct conflict with any sovereign nation, and no one is threatening our borders or sovereignty?

What a strange declaration to make publicly!

I can't see why there is so much fuss about Rwanda. Labour will repeal it.

Does it reflect the defence spending level? In view of global events not necessarily outside our door (yet)?

Maybe a response to Starmer? He was talking about defence stuff, nuclear deterrence etc. and also said he thought the defence budget should be 2.5%, but then Hunt had already said as much anyway. It's fair to say the UK's defence preparedness has been revealed to be a bit threadbare by recent events, so not really a surprise.

Not a chance of keeping it. They would be monumentally stupid to do so.

I can’t remember what Labour shadow Nick Ferrari had on this morning but she was pretty evasive when asked that direct question.

Yvette Cooper.

I think she was trying to explain what their approach will be instead of Rwanda but I agree there didn't seem to be a clear "we'll repeal it".

From where is the UK going to be threatened by a similar attack? Austria isn't about to lose its st and declare war on Slough. Broadly I'd agree with increased defence spending but Iron Dome is a very short range SAM system optimised to defend against massed attack with artillery rockets and mortars; the army might want it but the UK doesn't need it. A few batteries of Patriots would make more sense and would obviously work well alongside other NATO states with the same or similar compatible systems, or more domestically order a few extra batteries of Sky Sabre.
