It's grim but plenty of chaps from the regions had to live a lie as society was very backward for a very long time and remains so in numerous cultural backwaters. It's hardly the first case of some bloke hitting mid-life and doing this but there are wiser ways to come out. Maybe there's also a shortage of middle aged or pensioner rent boys working online?

And as grim as it is, I have empathy for the farce that he found himself in but celebrate that since the internet even the most medieval backwater in the U.K. has matured and that people won't have to live lies. That said, still appears to be no shortage of noncefinder generals about.

He wasn’t pulling, or hitting on him. He was paying him. A punter. Transactional. Moula. Money. Dosh. Whoring.
Not chicken feed but £30k. This isn’t a “relationship” this is a business arrangement, as such moralistic mothering about age stuff is irrelevant.
All was fine till the kids idiot mother killed his business!
As a parent of teenagers, if my 17 year old had a business that involved say washing cars or dog walking then I'd applaud their entrepreneurial spirit. Hopefully it will earn them enough to buy their first car or go on holiday with their friends. Great stuff.

Selling lewd pictures to a 60 year old pervert from the BBC to fund a crack habit, less so. Nosey and moralising old buzzard that I am.
Either encourage entrepreneurial spirit or don't

What about the inappropriate messages sent to junior staff on the BBC news team?

Depression. Reading between the lines leading to other issues.

Er.

‘Since the internet’.

Are you serious?
There is a million miles away from the likes of Grindr and the like, and oddly finding yourself paying out 10s of 1000s to a young male prostitute.

The Huw Edwards story, tragic or otherwise, appears to have little to do with a man discovering his sexuality in latter mid life, and much to do with a man with well documented mental health issues who appears to have made (and pictured) an utter arse of himself.

Which are you moralising over, your child or the 60 year old BBC pervert or both?

I think you have to be 18 to legally sell lewd pictures of yourself by the way.

The internet as in being connected to civilisation and realising that someone being different isn't a terrifying concept to rant and rave about or worse, persecute. Today, people who happen to be born different to others have less of a need to run away to islands of tolerance because the wider world has been brought to the more culturally remote places by the internet and it has genuinely increased social tolerances.

The whole 20th century concept of 'going west' to utilise the US colloquialism has dramatically weakened through the 21st century as such people have been more free to remain as the society around them has become more educated and less fearful as well as socially policed.

Edwards has certainly made an utter arse of himself, more importantly, he has exposed his children to potential issues from backward people which I am sure is what he feels the most sorry for and would have been a part of why he spent so much money trying to use covert services.

There is still a long way to go in terms of educating many to not be scared of people who speak differently, have different skin tone or different sexuality but with the significant weakening of that 'going west' culture we can see that we have made enormous inroads from the end of last century and an awful lot more people are just not caring that others are different because they aren't terrified of them any more because the wider world has been brought to their homes and they can see their fear was borne of ignorance not any rationale.

The predatory aspect of male genetics is technically wholly separate and there is no solving of that as it is simply something in some men. It transcends all superficial aspects of man and we can discover the predatory types anywhere we go and they can walk amongst us without us ever knowing. We can have friends who seem completely normal to us but you later learn that when alone with a female act very differently. These people obviously predate in whatever it is that they're attracted to, whether women, men, boys, girls, goats, cars, teaspoons etc.

I would hazard that someone like Spacey appeared to be such a person. Schofield's actions could be interpreted as such but there's nothing yet in the public domain to suggest Edwards was/is. And I suspect that is why he has ended up garnering more empathy towards his total mess than may otherwise have been the case.

It's something that's always been around and probably always will be. Certainly not something I'd encourage my children to get involved with and if I knew a friend or colleague of that age to get his kicks with drug addicted teenagers I would have a pretty low opinion of him

You are also a self proclaimed judge and jury. You've judged him and found him not guilty on grounds of diminished responsibility. But I guess you think it's ok to be judge and jury if you reach a not guilty verdict.
