He lost his defence case because the court agreed that his statements about the claimants being paedophiles was not only completely unfounded, but also could be shown to have been extremely damaging to their reputations and wellbeing.
He lost his counterclaim, however, not necessarily because the judge believes him to be a racist, but because for a case of defamation to win, the claimant also has to show significant damage to their reputation as a result. The judge's argument was that regardless of whether or not it was reasonable to consider him to be a racist, his own actions in recent years have already done so much damage to his reputation that a couple of people tweeting the accusation couldn't actually cause any significant damage to it!

I did start off with "I guess he could just be a nasty piece of work" but if he is he seems to have hidden it very well and then very quickly set fire to his career his marriage and his life.t people will say they wonder if it's a mental health thing. I do take your point and the concern and I'm not getting into an argument about it but I'd say it has to be a possibility.
