Putting the distressing nature of the incident aside some of the picture look amazing (probably the wrong word), like they're out of a film. The elegance and drama I suppose.
This for example :

No doubt the quality has gone to st but you get the point.

The black horse was being very looked after - well done to those involved -

Eta - the man in the black rucksack originally calmed the horse beer

Looks like the black horse has a bloody hoof and I assume it has skidded on the tarmac to stop looking at the marks on the road?

"Noise from builders caused horses to bolt". Must've been pretty bloody loud!
Are horses offended by profanity?
I suspect they saw an estimate from the builders.

Yep. The horses get launched from church towers or something. And then probably eaten.

Poor thing. That horse is in pain / lame.

Horses should never run on tarmac.

Knowing how well these horses are schooled and exposed to a wide variety of environments to ensure they are able to deal with stressful situations, the fact there are at least 5 horses who have run off would suggest 3rd party involvement- possibly a deliberate act? Maybe some kind of ultrasonic device used to trigger them?

Hopefully no one seriously injured.
This was my first thought. Sadly.

Not necessarily,if one horse gets sufficiently scared it will pass it on to some others.
They are flight animals after all and have to be desensitised to everything on both sides, forward and back.
There is no such thing as a ‘bomb proof’ horse.

Jokes aside, the builders noted must have done something unusual as they journo specifically excluded the terms building site/works.

As much as I’m curious to know the details of what they did to spook a well trained horse, that knowledge could be miss used by some muppet with an agenda to deliberately cause mayhem, so I wonder if they will keep it under wraps.

Awful for the poor horses and the people injured.

Suddenly reminded me of being at the Isle of Man TT races decades ago.

A helicopter had landed in a field to help an injured racer. Spooked a horse who galloped off and jumped onto the road/track just as a rider was screaming through.

Terrible outcome for both the rider and horse. We were further down but the horrific gasp from the crowd that saw it all still stays with me.

That was the '86 Junior race at Ballaugh Bridge, the helicopter had set down to pick up Brian Reid who crashed and broke his leg.

It was actually a pony that was spooked by the helicopter and jumped its fence straight into the path of Gene McDonnell, both rider and animal were killed instantly.

Inappropriate joke, should have kept it in the bank (unless you bank with Lloyds, they would let it out)

Eek,

My friend was telling me that he was on a sports bike with a girlfriend on the back and they were going at a very illegal speed when a small deer ran out, he said that he did not know how his brain computed it but he moved his weight back and gave it full throttle and chopped the animal in half without coming off the bike....obviously that would not happen with a half ton pony!

I'd disagree. They are bombproof horses these. Something else has happened to spook them, deliberately imho.
They are prey animals, even with a huge amount of training they can still revert to flight as a reaction to a threat. This is fundamental with prey animals, its why a number of people every year are killed or injured by cows.
