A few times but the one that sticks was when I was in a taxi and a car in front smashed into a lady motorcyclist coming the other way.

The lady was badly injured and the driver was having trouble getting out of his car because he was very drunk.

He tried to run away but my big taxi driver caught him and sat on him.

I was busy calling ambulance and police and this bloke was a local from the dodgy estate we were driving through.

A mob came out and started surrounded me and the taxi driver.

Ambulance turned up quickly but the police kept putting me on hold as the angry mob got angrier.

Looking back at it I'm amazed that I was so calm but it was a great relief when the police eventually turned up.

Once.
Driving home at midnight from a shift in the Police ops room. Flooded road on a bend with no street lights.
During the shift I’d taken a few 999 calls.

Once, either last year or the year before. Driving home from work and a launderette was on fire.

Around 10 times.

Three times when I've come across traffic accidents including once on the M40 at night when I found a coach across the carriageway with a BMW wedged between the back end and the central barrier. A short time before the Beemer had passed me at warp speed, I doubt the driver survived.

The second time was at a bend in the A433 near Didmarton after a car had gone off and the driver was trapped.

The third was in July '22 when a driver took a short cut over a junction and hit our car virtually head on, that one smarted a bit. My O/H is still feeling it.

The other times have been for my O/H after epileptic seizures following her initial diagnosis when she had a bad reaction to a prescribed drug and had to cold turkey completely before starting a different one. That took around three weeks when she had some quite severe seizures. I could usually cope but better save than sorry.

Twice. Both for fires on land at the side of the road.

It was the early days of mobile phones (I had a company one) so likely wouldn't get reported quickly.

1-2 times most days at the moment, we’ve had our house tagged so they respond immediately without going through the chat for 10 minutes.

Once, used to live opposite a pub and one night a lad got set upon by at least 6 other guys and was being brutally beaten in front of a big crowd. Police were fast to get there with vans and dogs but everyone scattered so no one was caught that night anyway.

1995. Came around a corner in a friends car to see another friends Civic VT on its roof, and another mates CRX arse end in a hedgerow opposite.

2019. A female worker at our house was being sexually harassed out the front of our house. That ended up with the guy spread eagle on the ground after a copper pulled a taser out on him.

2020. Fed up of two young lads drug dealing from a pull in next to our house.

Last summer. Calling 999 on a who perpetrated an unprovoked road rage attack on my wife, then giving chase when she scarpered. That one will have repercussions for him, but I'll wait.

Once. A pal broke his ankle jumping over a fence and a car wasn't to hand.

The ambulance crew were ecstatic to have an actual injury to deal with. Must've been a quiet week.

Once about 20 years ago… Land Rover coming on the opposite carriageway on the A90 lost control of its trailer which jumped the barrier to my side while LR flipped over… the driver crawled out amazingly.

1. Car stuffed into central reservation on the M40, three people stood there
2. Load of suitcases dumped in the outside lane on M1 at 11pm
3. Man stood in our driveway peering into my M3
4. Man climbed into our back garden laying on the floor outside our patio windows (initially not judged 999-worthy)

I called 999 from a call box(remember those)whilst cycling home from work in the early hours of a Saturday morning, young man getting a bit rough with his girlfriend. The call box was directly opposite Trafford police station, the call handler asked me where that was!

During the 2011 riots. Teens were keen to burn down their own community centre, smashed the windows and started a small fire. Managed to put it out before the fire engine and riot police arrived. fkers were long gone.

Once for an ambulance for a guy who'd had his head put through a window late on a Saturday night, he'd lost a lot of blood. Local copper (remember those!) who I knew pretty well and had turned up to ask some questions told me they were launching a murder investigation and there were crime scene techs all over the pavement taking samples etc. The guy survived fortunately and 3 people he'd gone to school with went to prison for assaulting him.

Once for an ambulance for my sister when she had her first epileptic fit - previously totally undiagnosed, so that was a bit of a surprise...

Couple of times for incidents on the motorway - kids throwing fireworks off a bridge onto cars on the motorway, and for a fallen tree branch that was sat on the central reservation blocking lane 3 in each direction - fortunately it was very early in the morning and the road was very quiet.

Reminded me of another incident

Driving near Bolton Abbey, roads were twisty and narrow.

I was in an Impreza and driving quickly. In my mirror I see an old Corsa being driven by a young person, one handed and holding a phone, it didn't last and the Corsa was on its roof. I called 999 before getting out my car, went to her aid, she was fine and her dad was on his way already.

Police were not impressed (geddit?) with me calling them out when there was no car and no injured person.

Once. Wife knocked of bicycle, knocked unconscious and possible broken arm with lots of bleeding.
Told ambulance wait would be upto four hours and recommended to take taxi.

So bundled unconscious wife into an Uber whilst leaving the (extremely helpful) plod to look after bikes.

Ambulance phoned five hours later when we were waiting in A&E to say they were having trouble finding us.

This was in West London nr Richmond Park of all places!
