Since I'm young and naive, I put an application in to the RAF. Went down today, discussed my options, I was in shirt, tie, smart trousers and smart shoes. Since the other potential applicants were in "casual" wear, I'm wondering if I was a little overdressed? Want to get the pitch right when I go back for my second informal discussion...

Not referring to the RAF as the Army would be a very good start.

No, having been in one myself today for an Army Officer brief, you will do well to turn up well presented at each stage regardless of what you are aiming for.

The army recruiting office I saw recently wasn't very smart at all. Looked a bit scruffy really. Still, an office is an office I suppose.

Agreed. Every interview i turned up to i was very smartly dressed, don't worry about what the others are wearing just concentrate on looking smart and you'll do well.

Yeah, might as well start getting up 5:20am.

Just for the experience.

How smart?

Depends on the role, the infantry usually like recruits to spell their own name. wink

You were not over dressed. A lot of people will dress casual at the early stages but with the RAF you must always dress smart for every meeting after your selection test.

hehe

Sorry, wasn't very clear. It's one office, with three desks - one for each of Army, Navy and RAF.

As it happens, I'm going back down to talk to the Army tomorrow.

Right, so carrying on as I am is the best way... cheers chaps. smile

As it was your first 'informal' chat then you were probably over-dressed, but it will have been noted that you were smart and won't go against you. If your next chat is also informal, then you shouldn't worry about being suited. However, when you do finally have you proper 'interview' then you will need to be in your suit and shoes as that's when it will count.

I went to a meeting for being a logistics officer the other day and i was in jeans and polo shirt, everyone else wore a suit though so i felt a tad scruffy. Although as it was an informal interview the colonel didn't mind but told me to get suited for the briefing...
