If the Elise never existed the VX220 would be almost without peers for what it can offer. But the Elise does.
Cracking value for money though (wrt VX). Why does my spidey sense tell me a vx is less likely to have been enthusiast owned, more likely to have been bent and has an internet reputation for being a bit unforgiving? Is the unforgiving bit because VX sold them to young chaps who should have been in Astras? Think you're fairly wide of the mark there. Not that I know many VX owners but loads of Elise are chucked at the scenery each winter! Yeah they are cheaper like for like so might have a younger demographic I suppose. The seemingly large number with Cat D or C status stems from the shorter supply of replacement clams compared to Elise I believe. I'm quite tempted by a VXT with the right bits on it currently.

Great Pretender said: Beefmeister said: Yep. I think offering the CSL only in SMG format will rank as one of the biggest cock-ups in Car history. It's an outstanding car, but with a proper gearbox it could've been epic.
Sadly though, I don't think i'd convert a CSL to manual. I'd rather preserve the value of a CSL and instead take a manual M3 CS and add all the CSL visual addenda. Would save a lot of money too... In fairness, it's not. I've posted many times in here about how abysmal the SMG is in town (i.e. I'd rather walk). But on a raid, the whole thing just came together. Banging up and down the box in Defcon 1, with that induction howl and tippy-toe chassis dancing from apex to apex was a magical experience. I still rate the CSL as the best car I ever owned. it was a simply incredible thing to drive at 11/10ths. And that is the point of it. Unless you have the space to open the thing up properly then just put the keys back in the bowl. It doesn't do half-arsed. And of course the SMG allows you to lean really hard on the brakes (which just about cope on the road), right into the corner with the left foot and then blow open the throttle at or preferably before the apex, so that you emerge out of the corner with more than a dab of oppo and the rear tyres on fire. And so predictable was it on the limit that this behaviour was a regular Saturday morning occurrence. With a manual box' it would of course be brilliant machine, but I'm not convinced it would be a better one. I still maintain the CSL's a better road car than the 996 GT3, even with that gearbox. In fact I've just made myself cry GP, your description of the CSL makes me want one even more, however, "better road car than the 996 GT3"!!? Challenge!!

306 rallye or a willy? Tough tough call. Nowt to choose I would think from a drivers point of view but the Williams edged it for me from the desirability factor. Still fancy a 106 Rallye. S2. In Indigo. Or a black lhd. The Rallye is a nicer place to be, but the willy would trump it for visceral driving experience for me

306 rallye or a willy? I'm ashamed to say, I've never had the pleasure of the 306. Really nice examples of either are rare enough that it may come down to whatever is available at the time. I was looking for a nice GTi6 or Williams a few years ago but gave up as it was an excercise in futility without paying silly 4* type prices. I've had 4 GTI-6/Rallyes in various states. A good one is a particularly fine thing, as I'd guess would be a willy. Depends what you want to use it for. You could still have a 306 as an only car, maybe not so with the Willy. Good ones are out there, they just take some finding

What Porsches should I be looking at with a 12k budget? Mainly want an m3 but could consider a Porsche.

V8 GT? Rear engined flat six of either air/oil or water cooled nature? What do you consider *reasonable* running costs?

You know that pang of guilt mixed with pain mixed with longing you get when you catch sight of a girl you broke up with, after a long period of no contact, despite having been right to break up with her, because you once loved her and you had good --even special-- times together? Good ones are out there, they just take some finding My friend had 2 1.9 205s in a row and then moved onto an L-reg Clio Williams. Was so excited when he brought it round for a demo but a bit disappointed by it in the end - for me it didn't live up to the legend. Decided my 309Gti was just as much hot hatch fun for a lot less cash. Like the looks of them though

The Giffon badge puts quite a dampener on the prices of the VX... Blame our esteemed neighbours in France and the lowlands. And our old mates, the Germans. They appear to be exporting en masse and pushing, or at least holding, values up.

Thus I give you the GT Radial Champiro HPY (Indonesian, for the record, though not sure where they're actually made, they have a development facility here in the UK at MIRA). Yeah, baby. I had a set of these fitted to my E38 740 Sport 6 months ago as I could not find a set of Falkens in the correct size with matching patten. I have found them to perform as well as the Falkens in the wet and dry. From a road noise perspective, there is no difference.

If only there was a 'My Birds' section where the little reviews would provide valuable insight into why hooking up with that ex is actually a s t idea despite how much you inexplicably want to.

I struggle with this: I just couldn't bring myself to spend £42k on a copy. My 42k would go on something like an original CSL or the nicest 60s / early 70s 911 I could find within budget.
