The first cars that made me a petrolhead were my toy cars as a kid. With no real parameters for what was or was not good, these were my favourites: On the big screen: My father's first "sporty" cars that gave him street cred: Cortina GT with twin white stripes either side under the bumper, Rostyles and a black vinyl roof and I recall some STP sub-bumper stickers too ...and a Firenza 2000SL in Flamenco Red with black vinyl roof. In terms of inspirational cars then Pininfarina Modulo, Citroen SM, Lamborghini Miura and Countach and Droop Snoot Firenza. Working class heroes: Lotus Cortina/1600E; Dolly Sprint; RS2000.

When I was really sick as a kid, mum took me into Woolworths to buy whichever Matchbox car I wanted. It was an orange and white Corvette.

Think mine was this when they first came out. It was the first car I remember seeing in the flesh and thinking WOW! Some years later I owned one for almost 7 years. Gut instinct! Mike

Mike when I was at primary school (maybe 8 or so) every day I used to walk past an MR2 like the one above, and then one of these with a full green interior with crushed green velour, and then one of these which admittedly has few coolness credentials but i remember being fascinated by the idea of 4 wheel steering, which i think it had written on a badge on the back.

I'm 34 and I would have said that I was Gran Turismo generation as I remember when it came out, I was 20 at the time and very into gaming, used to play it all the time with my mates. Didn't know there were 4 year olds doing the same thing.

When these first appeared new and a near neighbour had one I was twelve years of age. A few trips in that car driven with spirit sewed the seeds of a lifetime's interest in Cars and transport generally. Still think this aged design has a quality many new cars lack entirely ~ elegance :~ The MG Magnette ZA and ZBs from the mid 1950s.
