Chaps,

I know it's not the normal fayre of this thread, but I've asked on the Audi forum and got no response so far. That 90 Quattro posted earlier... is it worth having, if I can get it for £750? I don't have space or inclination to have a "spare" car so I'd have to DD it. Do we think it's going to cause me heartache beyond measure, or is it worth spending my Sunday driving to Cornwall for?

Important points to note:

-) I have am only just capable of doing an oil change and tend to break stuff when I try.

+) I have comprehensive RAC recovery.
+) There is an Audi specialist in Cheltenham who will give it the once-over

I was planning on splashing £5-6k on either something from Munich, Buchloe or Swindon. But this old thing just appeals for some reason, and I can't work out why. The facts that I love 5cyl engines, I've never owned a 4wd car, and there's only 9 of the buggers left, may have something to do with it. The money for a nice car can stay in the bank until after winter. What do we think?
What's the worst that could happen?

You could decide it's not really working and move it on.

You're clearly rather taken with it, so I say it's a no brainer.

I do like the look of the E38, but the LS400 is a real master stroke. Great "shaved from a block of steel" looks, plenty of straight lines and folded edges that exhude a business-like air. Understated and extrovert at the same time, quite a design! It just says "I'm en route to the command block now".

I've been looking at LS400's over the past couple of days... a little more stylish than the equivalent BMW.
Wait, what? Should have gone to Specsavers.
To some there's a little whiff of council about 80's and 90's BMWs I'm afraid.

I'd concur. Arguably the last of the "hewn from granite" Audi's with 5 cylinders and 4wd. I'd go for it at that price.

Will be interesting to see what the Omega makes. If I ever need a cheap car in a hurry I will be hunting one down.

The truth of the matter is that this thread "Best smoker barges £1-£5k" should only be one post long.

On any sensible, logical analysis the best £1k smoker barge is a Mk 3 LS400, the best £1.5-£2k smoker barge is a Mk 4 LS400, the best £3k smoker barge a Mk 1 LS430 and the best £4-5k smoker barge is a Mk 2 LS430.

They're faster than most, more economical than just about any equivalent, better equipped, better built, better designed and go wrong significantly less often. From the Mk 4 LS400 on they're even quite good fun to drive.

No. The thread should just be full of varying levels of E38. Possibley the peak of Bavarian build quality and all the car you'll ever need. High level of waft with the ability to chase Porsches on a country lane. Lolopy Toyotas don't get close wink

(awaits Garlick to completely balance this out with his poem; ode to a W140 (with hubcaps)

Always room for an Omega in my world.

That'n looks nice, but I'm more of a pre-facelift guy. One day I hope to find a nice one that still smells like new. cloud9

I think you may have caught Foxitis. The E38 is a lovely motor no doubt, but to suggest no other barge compares is rather mental.

We all know nothing holds a candle to a 164 Cloverleaf.*

Enthusiasts like us can tell the difference between future classic and council but my daft wife views all BMWs from 1985 to 2002 as chav. Silly cow.

Hmmm. Having piloted both E38's and Ls's, I have to conclude the best barge is, without doubt, a 560SEC.

Actually, readers in this thread have a variety of options;

1. Super solid, extremely comfy waft with amazing reliability(Lexus)

2. Super solid, extremely comfy waft with a sporty edge(BMW)

3. Super solid, extremely comfy waft with pearless build (Mercedes)

all available with prices from £750 up and all of them being the correct choice. How the hell are we getting away with this?

Lol, I said chase, not beat. In my mind I had a Boxster of similar vintage, not a nearly new 997, even in auto mincer spec wink

I know perfectly well that the 7 isn't the be all and end all and probably isn't the best barge out there, it's amazing what can be had though. Our cup runeth over compared to fans of other genre
